Since the recently concluded ‘House of the Dragon’ (HOTD) Season 3 premiered, viewers witnessed multiple characters’ deaths, shocking plot twists, and bloody battles. As the season ended with the latest Episode 8, fans are now eager for the upcoming season of ‘HOTD.’ For that, viewers have to wait until 2028, as that’s the expected schedule for the ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 4 premiere. The third season concluded on August 9. Before that, the highly anticipated show’s first season premiered in August 2022, followed by Season 2 in June 2024 and Season 3 in June 2026. Due to the scriptwriting, filming, and longer production time, including visual effects, there is quite a long time before a new season of a show as massive as ‘HOTD’ is released.

As Gold Derby reported, the showrunner Ryan Condal also talked about the frustration that viewers might feel regarding the time it takes in between seasons: “It’s a long downtime between seasons. It takes a long time to make the show. Prep and shooting of the show — and this is after scripts are written — take a year, and then it takes seven-eight months to make dragons. So, do the math. It’s not possible to come out every year,” he shared. He also joked, “I’m very sorry, but you guys decided to be fans of the show called House of the Dragon.”

HBO series’ third season premiered with the adaptation of Naval’s “The Battle of the Gullet,” while it ended with the Battle of Tumbleton, with massive soldiers and civilian casualties. It happened after Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and his men attacked inside the town walls to get Prince Daeron Targaryen (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) and Ormund Hightower (James Norton). Notably, the episode and the season ended with Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) learning about her half-sister (and prisoner) Helaena’s (Phia Saban) death after she jumped out of the castle’s window. She had the unique ability to see glimpses of the future as she was a dreamer. The showrunner explained Helaena’s death as, “It’s a magic going out of the world when a Targaryen dreamer dies. As rare as the dragons are, the dreamers are even rarer. Now, to know that we are going forward without one of these in the line spells a certain darkness for the days to come for the Targaryen dynasty.”

Teasing the upcoming ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 4, the showrunner added, “This is a giant crucible and everybody comes out the end of it wisened a little bit harder, more corrupted. We just love where we leave off at the end of the season. Even though it's another bit of a cliffhanger, so to speak, it's a hook for the next season.” Despite multiple deaths and battles, fan-favorite cast members, including Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower), Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon), Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno), Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon II Targaryen), Ewan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen), and more, are expected to return for the upcoming season.
