Is there going to be ‘Insidious 7’? Director teases future as franchise takes wild new turn
'Insidious: Out of the Further' was just released in theaters, and it has already sparked conversation about the next part. The last few movies' box office performance primarily determined whether the studio greenlit a sequel. 'Insidious: The Last Key,' released in 2018, was supposed to be the final installment, according to Screen Rant. But after it became the franchise's highest-grossing movie until then, plans for a fifth one quickly came together. 'Insidious: The Red Door' again became the franchise's highest-grossing, surpassing the previous one's gross, and led to a sixth installment. Hence, it can be confidently said that how 'Out of the Further' performs will decide the franchise's future.
According to Variety, the sixth installment is set to collect $23 million to $27 million in its opening weekend. The movie's budget is just $18 million, and hence a massive profit is expected. This all but confirms the sequel if past patterns are to be believed. As far as the storyline is concerned, the sixth movie more or less ties up every loose end. However, there is one small opening that can be used to set up the seventh installment. The latest part teased that Josh and Dalton sealed their door to 'The Further' (in part six's ending), and in the process, unleashed several unknown evils into the world. It can be expected that the next movie in the franchise will be the spin-off titled 'Thread.' The movie has been in active development since 2022 and will be directed by Jeremy Slater. Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani have been announced as part of the movie's cast. Nothing else about the plot has been revealed.
James Wan directed the first two movies. Leigh Whannell took charge of the third movie; the fourth had Adam Robitel, and the fifth had Patrick Wilson in the director's chair. Jacob Chase was hired to direct the sixth movie. Chase was recently asked about whether he would like to return for the seventh installment. The director revealed that he had such a great experience making 'Out of the Further' that he would definitely consider returning to the franchise again. He believes there is a lot of story yet to be told. The director added, "There are more places to take these characters."
However, Chase clarified that he wanted individualism in every one of his projects, even in the 'Insidious' ones with such a huge legacy. He also wishes to headline his own franchises. The director claimed that he was "very interested in making my own lore for my own franchises." Even though he has looked up to luminaries like James and Whannell, he eventually wants to "create my own 'Insidious'." Considering the franchise has grossed $740 million globally against a $60.5 million budget, all parties would be interested in continuing the ride.
