Will there be a ‘My Brilliant Career’ Season 2? Sequel novel could continue Sybylla’s story
‘My Brilliant Career’ introduces viewers to Sybylla Melvyn, a young woman in 1901 Australia who refuses to let society decide her future. Played by Philippa Northeast, Sybylla must choose between the life expected of her and her ambition to become a writer. The six-episode Netflix series premiered on August 13 and ends with a decision that could take her story beyond its first season. Netflix has not renewed ‘My Brilliant Career’ for Season 2. The streamer has also not announced plans for another installment, so there is currently no release date, production timeline, or confirmed returning cast. However, the series entered Netflix’s Top 10 shortly after its debut, and a second Miles Franklin novel offers material that could continue Sybylla’s journey.
The first season ends with Sybylla rejecting Harry Beecham’s (Christopher Chung) marriage proposal despite their feelings. Instead of accepting the life that marriage would offer, she leaves to pursue her writing career. The final scene shows Sybylla waiting for a train, bringing the season’s central conflict between love and independence to a close while also placing her at the start of another journey. In an interview, Northeast told TV Insider that she wants to explore what happens after Sybylla leaves. “I want to see this character in other landscapes being challenged by other environments,” she said. “Where will she go? Which train will she go on next? What will she learn next from a different environment? I think it’s a character that’s [ripe] for new landscapes.” The actor also described the finale as a complete ending. She said the closing train scene “encapsulates everything that she’s been through and the growth that she’s made at that point.”
Franklin wrote a sequel novel titled ‘My Career Goes Bung,’ published in 1946. The book follows an older Sybylla after her autobiography turns her into a successful author. Her work also causes problems when people believe they recognize themselves in its characters and object to how they have been portrayed. Sybylla then travels to Sydney to advance her literary career, where she encounters patrons, critics, and suitors. Netflix has not confirmed if ‘My Career Goes Bung’ will be adapted. Season 2 could also revisit Sybylla and Harry after she rejected his proposal. Christopher Chung could therefore return alongside Northeast, although no cast members have been confirmed. Other possible returning actors include Anna Chancellor, Genevieve O’Reilly, Kate Mulvany, Jake Dunn, Alexander England, Sherry-Lee Watson and Miah Madden. For now, all six episodes of ‘My Brilliant Career’ are streaming on Netflix.
