‘The End of Oak Street’ turns its dinosaur story into a time-travel puzzle in its final act. The film begins as a suburban family drama that quickly turns into a survival story when their neighborhood is suddenly transported into the prehistoric era.

As dinosaurs overrun Oak Street, the Platts struggle to stay together and find a way back home, eventually discovering that mysterious wormholes may be their only escape route. After Greg Platt (Ewan McGregor) is killed, Denise Platt (Anne Hathaway), Audrey (Maisy Stella), Brian (Christian Convery), and Jeannette (Jordan Alexa Davis) try to find a way out of the prehistoric era. Their escape leads to a family barbecue two years later. However, a tiny detail in the barbecue party reveals that returning home did not restore the original timeline.

There are two Jeannettes! That apparently happened because the wormhole does not erase the girl who already exists before Oak Street disappears. The Jeannette who survives the dinosaurs returns to an earlier point and then warns her parents and her younger self. The younger Jeannette avoids the disaster while the older one remains in the same period. Seeing them together confirms that the survivors have created duplicates while returning to the original timeline.

The Platts realize that the glowing bubbles around Oak Street may be portals through time. Denise and Greg find one, but refuse to use it while Audrey and Brian are missing. The children return with Jeannette, whose parents were killed after the neighborhood entered the past. Greg later confronts an Allosaurus to protect them, but the dinosaur kills him in front of his family.

Denise and the children discover another wormhole as fire and dinosaurs close in on the remaining homes. After their first attempt at entering the wormhole goes wrong, all four pass through and emerge outside Oak Street shortly before the original event. Jeannette goes back to reach her family. Denise uses a payphone to order a pizza, knowing the call will send the earlier Greg away from Oak Street and outside the wormhole’s range.

Denise also warns Mrs. Huddleston, the librarian, and other residents. The survivors watch from a distance as Oak Street disappears. Prehistoric land and dinosaurs take their place, showing that the wormhole swaps the two areas. Denise manages to change who is caught in it, but she could not stop the exchange.

Saving Greg does not undo the events the returning family experienced. The two Jeannettes establish that changing the past creates another version of a person instead of replacing the first. The previous versions of Denise, Audrey, and Brian are stuck in Oak Street when it disappears, which means they have been transported to the prehistoric era.

The film does not show what happens to the three, but its rules suggest they are transported to the prehistoric era. This time, Greg is not with them because the pizza order moved him out of range. The neighbors Denise warned may also be absent. The second Platt family could face the same dinosaurs without Greg and several people who helped the returning versions survive.

The Greg who attends the barbecue never experienced the dinosaur attack, while another Greg has already died. Denise, Audrey, and Brian have been reunited with him, but their earlier counterparts may still be trapped. Starbuck, the family dog, is briefly separated during the chaos of the wormhole event, but he later reappears in the final act, confirming that he survives.

The ending gives one Platt family a future without resolving the fate of the other. The film does not explain what created the wormholes. Flashes and tremors signal the swap, but no person or experiment causes them on screen. The event leaves dinosaurs in 1982 while sending Oak Street millions of years into the past. Its origin remains unknown. Two years later, Denise has published a book titled ‘The End of Oak Street,’ and residents credit her with saving them.

A news report says some dinosaurs were killed while others were captured for research. Scientists still do not know why the wormhole formed. The film is currently running in theaters. A sequel has not been announced, but the dinosaurs, missing duplicates, and unexplained portals leave the story open-ended.
