There has been plenty of speculation about 'The End of Oak Street's connection with J.J. Abrams' 'Cloverfield' franchise. The theory gained traction after the film's trailer showed a suburban neighborhood being transported into a prehistoric setting. Abrams has now addressed those rumors and says there is only one connection.

Directed by David Robert Mitchell, 'The End of Oak Street' stars Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway as a married couple, Greg and Denise Platt. Their normal lives are upended when their entire neighborhood is suddenly transported to an unknown environment where they encounter dinosaurs and other dangers. The family then finds itself surrounded by dinosaurs and other dangers. The story follows their attempt to survive in a place far removed from the modern world they knew. Abrams has said the dinosaur premise was one of the main reasons he wanted to make the movie.

The setup quickly led fans to connect the film with 'Cloverfield.' The movie was originally titled 'Flowervale Street,' and McGregor and Hathaway's characters share the surname Platt with Hud Platt from the first 'Cloverfield' movie. The 2018 film features news reports of entire city blocks disappearing due to tears in space and time caused by a dangerous new device. That detail appeared similar to the sudden disappearance of Oak Street. Even the real-world location added fuel to the theory.

Fans noticed that Oak Street in Santa Monica ends near Clover Park, close to Abrams' production company Bad Robot. Those clues created plenty of speculation, but Abrams has now ruled out a major connection. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Abrams said the only connection to the 'Cloverfield' movies is Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who stars in '10 Cloverfield Lane' and is McGregor's real-life partner.

He also said that the fans were making connections based on details they happened to notice. His comments suggest that the similarities fans noticed do not reflect a connection between the two movies. That means 'The End of Oak Street' should be viewed as a standalone sci-fi movie rather than another 'Cloverfield' chapter. Its story focuses on a family dealing with dinosaurs after their neighborhood is removed from its familiar surroundings.

The distinction also separates the movie from the main threat seen in 'Cloverfield.' That franchise has focused on alien and monster-related events. Mitchell's new film instead uses prehistoric creatures as the central danger. Early reactions have already praised the movie. while some critics have called it the best dinosaur movie since 'Jurassic Park.'

For fans who expected a hidden 'Cloverfield' sequel, Abrams' comments settle the biggest question. The similarities between the two movies remain interesting clues, but they do not point to a shared universe. 'The End of Oak Street' releases in cinemas on August 13. With its dinosaur survival story, the film now has a chance to build its own identity without relying on a 'Cloverfield' connection.
