What happened to Austen's older sister, Kyle? 'Southern Charm' star talks about his sister's death on Season 8
Season 8 of 'Southern Charm' may seem like it's all about the drama, but there are glimpses of the show that remind fans that there is certainly more to it all. Although they might be few and far between, there are moments when the cast opens up about their past or stories that truly had an impact on them. It's no secret that Austen Kroll is close to his sister, Katie. But, as fans are aware, she isn't the only sister he had, seeing that his older sister, Kyle, tragically passed away when they were kids. And now, in Season 8, revisiting his childhood home certainly brought back both good and bad memories.
As Craig and Shep joined Austen on his visit to his childhood home, they got a chance to meet his parents, Tom and Wendy as well. During the drive there, Austen took them on a little tour of his childhood home, pointing out homes and sharing funny anecdotes from his past, explaining that he even learned how to rollerblade in this cul-de-sac.

As they pulled up to his parent's house to help them move and join them for lunch, Wendy shared a box of curios filled with old memories. She explained that they had been in this house for 25 years and with it came many old memories and great family moments. In his confessionals, Austen spoke about how the house is filled with good memories, but there are also some dark sides to it. Austen's older sister, Kyle, passed away when they moved to Charlotte. Austen opened up about her death in the previous seasons of the show, where he explained what happened. 'When we first moved to Charlotte we went to this beautiful state park in Asheville for the weekend and so we went to this place called Chimney Rock and they take you up and ... I mean, long, long story short she fell off the side,' he added back then.
As reported by Distractify, Kyle, who was 9 at the time, ran ahead of her family during their hiking back in 1994. She somehow found herself outside the safety barricade and by the time the adults could get to her, she slipped and fell 200 feet down. The trail at the time was slick due to heavy rainfall during the past 24 hours.
Revisiting those memories was hard, but Austen also explained that this was the same house his younger sister Katie was born in, which also allowed the family to heal from Kyle's loss. Austen continued to revisit old memories with his parents and friends which even included reading poetry from Austen's old 'poetry notebook'.
