'The Masked Singer' Season 14 Episode 3 sends two renowned celebrities home and honestly we're surprised
Ugh, as if! Fox’s ‘The Masked Singer’ turned back the clock, threw on some plaid skirts, and casually sent two famous faces packing during Season 14, Episode 3. The episode was titled 'Clueless Night,' which aired January 21, leaned all the way into the '90s vibe with zero apologies. The hour opened with a group moment as Snow Cone, Scarab, Handyman, and Pugcasso shared the stage for a cover of 'Kids in America.' It’s the same song that kicks off the 1996 film ‘Clueless’. The vibe was loud, playful, and slightly chaotic in that particular way only ‘The Masked Singer’ manages to pull off. However, after that kickoff, the competition got serious fast.
Each character returned for their second solo performance of the season. Meanwhile, Crane also swooped in as the Wild Card contestant, according to Just Jared. By the time the smoke settled and the votes were counted, three characters were safe and moving forward: Pugcasso, Snow Cone, and Crane. Two others were not so lucky. And the guessing game finally came to an end for both of them under those oversized masks. The first to be sent home was the Handyman. Robin Thicke locked in his guess early and stuck with it. He correctly named rapper Tone Loc as the celebrity behind the costume.
Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg went in a completely different direction with Chuck D, Ken Jeong guessed Mr. T, and Rita Ora tossed out Ice-T. Once the mask came off, Tone Loc took the reveal in stride, smiling as the audience reacted. He later explained to Variety that the whole experience started as a bit of a challenge from friends. According to him, “They didn’t think that I would. Probably because I have this macho type of image or something like that. Like, ‘you would not get up on here, put a costume on and go dance and do whatever at this age.” Joke’s on them. He showed up and sang anyway.
The night wasn’t done handing out surprises. Later in the episode, Scarab found herself in the spotlight of elimination. And this time it was Rita Ora who nailed the identity, correctly guessing Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson. Thicke thought Regina King was under the mask, McCarthy-Wahlberg leaned toward Angela Bassett, and Jeong guessed Cynthia Erivo. Seeing Henson go out this early definitely raised some eyebrows. But ‘The Masked Singer’ has never been a show that plays by predictable rules.
One good performance doesn’t always guarantee safety, and sometimes the audience connects more with the oddball characters who seem to be having the most fun. With this episode in the books, the list of unmasked celebrities for Season 14 keeps growing. Tone Loc and Taraji P. Henson now join Tiffany Haddish, who appeared as Le Who Who, Todd and Julie Chrisley as the Croissants, and baseball legend David “Big Papi” Ortiz, who performed as Googly Eyes.
