'James Bond' is back — Amazon finally reveals sequel's release date ahead of its big Villeneuve reboot
All genres have their crests and troughs, rising to fame and fading away from popularity in due course. However, the engaging genre of spy thrillers and espionage films has firmly established itself as here to stay. In contemporary television, several spy and espionage thrillers have made a name for themselves in recent years. If one were to recall, shows such as 'Slow Horses' on Apple TV, 'The Agency' on Paramount+, and 'Citadel' on Prime Video have hooked an entire new generation of audiences to the genre. Nevertheless, if one were to look back, the 'James Bond' movie franchise can directly or indirectly be credited for the popularity of the genre as a whole.
The 'James Bond' movie franchise has a long and rich history to commend itself. Beginning with the 1962 film 'Dr. No' starring Sean Connery in the titular role, the franchise released the last of its entries in the form of 'No Time To Die' in the year 2021. As it has been confirmed that Daniel Craig will no longer be stepping into the shoes of the handsomely dressed spy, the search for the next actor to portray Agent 007 has been raging on without success. Although an official announcement in this regard has yet to be made, rumors have at various points suggested that stars such as Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson might be considered for the role.
In any case, the rights to the franchise were recently acquired by Amazon MGM Studios, and it currently plans to reboot the franchise with a new untitled movie directed by Denis Villeneuve, of 'Dune' fame. It must be remembered that much of this is speculative and has been derived from rumor mills, as an official release date, plot, or cast for the Villeneuve Bond film has yet to be announced. On the other hand, the publication of a new James Bond novel is the definite way in which the long-running franchise rejuvenates itself and keeps moving forward. Titled 'King Zero: The New James Bond Novel', the latest edition in the literary franchise will be hitting the shelves on September 24.
The book is written by the author of the popular 'Young Bond' series, Charlie Higson, and features Agent 007 during his teenage years. In terms of the book's plot, the official synopsis reads, "Bond embarks on a globe-trotting adventure to piece together the clues to a massive secret that was important enough for a traitor to kill an agent in the Saudi desert." The villain of the book, King Zero, is described as "a villain unlike any before." Elsewhere, Villeneuve's upcoming 'Dune: Part Three' is scheduled to release in theatres on December 18.
