Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ gets major 4K and Blu-ray release update
Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ is preparing to leave theaters and make its way to home entertainment. After a massive theatrical run, the blockbuster adaptation of Homer’s epic poem will become available to rent and purchase digitally from November 17, with the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release arriving on the same day. The home release comes four months after the film debuted exclusively in theaters on July 17. The theatrical window continues Nolan’s preference for giving his films an extended big-screen run before moving them to digital and physical formats, following a similar strategy used for ‘Oppenheimer’.
That wait appears to have paid off. ‘The Odyssey’ has earned roughly $1.35 billion worldwide, making it Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date. The epic has also crossed $500 million domestically and overtook ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. IMAX has played a major role in the movie’s success. The premium format has contributed around $257 million in ticket sales, making it the highest-grossing IMAX release ever.
The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the Greek king attempting to return to Ithaca following the Trojan War. His journey forms the center of Nolan’s nearly three-hour adaptation, which brings together a sprawling ensemble that includes Tom Holland as Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope, alongside Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron. Based on Homer’s ancient epic, the movie follows its central hero through a dangerous journey filled with mythical encounters and seemingly impossible obstacles as he tries to find his way back home.
Nolan’s interpretation brings his familiar large-scale filmmaking and non-linear storytelling approach to one of literature’s most enduring tales. The upcoming 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release will also give viewers another way to revisit the film outside theaters after its record-breaking run. Details about bonus features and additional physical editions have not yet been announced. With ‘The Odyssey’ now standing as the biggest box-office success of Nolan’s career, its move to digital and 4K marks the next major chapter for a film that has already made an enormous impact on the theatrical landscape.
