Kayce Dutton is setting out on a brand-new path far removed from the sprawling pastures and family chaos of the Yellowstone Ranch. Luke Grimes is returning to the ‘Yellowstone’ universe in ‘Y: Marshals,’ a fresh crime-drama procedural that marks a major tonal shift for Taylor Sheridan’s expanding franchise. Instead of ranch politics and land wars, the new series follows Kayce as he steps into the world of the U.S. Marshals Service. As per TV Insider, set to premiere March 1, 2026, on CBS, ‘Y: Marshals’ introduces a very different rhythm than its parent series.

While ‘Yellowstone’ was written entirely by Sheridan and built as a serialized cable epic, this spin-off moves into network territory with a writers’ room and a more case-driven structure. Still, the heart of the show remains connected to Kayce’s past, and to the legacy of his late father, John Dutton (Kevin Costner). ‘Y: Marshals’ is just one of several projects extending the ‘Yellowstone’ world. Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) are slated to anchor their own spin-off series, ‘The Dutton Ranch,’ and Michelle Pfeiffer will lead ‘The Madison.’ But for now, ‘Y: Marshals’ shifts the spotlight to the youngest surviving Dutton.

CBS dropped its first teaser for ‘Y: Marshals’ on September 5, 2025, a brief 10-second clip showing Kayce in full Marshal gear. The teaser also gives a quick glimpse of Belle, a new character played by ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and ‘Rescue: Hi Surf’ star Arielle Kebbel. Production began in fall 2025 in Summit County, Utah, the same region where the early seasons of ‘Yellowstone’ were filmed before the flagship series moved operations to Montana. Also, Grimes isn’t the only ‘Yellowstone’ veteran returning, according to TVGuide. The new series brings back familiar faces including Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater, Mo Brings Plenty as Mo, and Brecken Merrill as Tate.

They’ll be joined by several new additions to the cast: Arielle Kebbel as Belle, Ash Santos as Andrea, Tatanka Means as Miles, Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin, and Brett Cullen as Harry Gifford, the authoritative head of the Montana U.S. Marshals. However, one noticeable absence is Kelsey Asbille, who played Kayce’s wife Monica throughout ‘Yellowstone.’ With no official explanation yet, her omission raises questions. CBS describes the series as following Kayce after he leaves the Yellowstone Ranch behind. Now part of an elite U.S. Marshals unit, he uses his experience as both a cowboy and a Navy SEAL to deliver a brand of “range justice” to Montana.

In the ‘Yellowstone’ finale, Kayce agreed to sell most of the Dutton Ranch to Thomas Rainwater for $1.25 an acre. Kayce kept a small portion for himself, wife Monica, and son Tate, seemingly ready to embrace a quieter life after years of brutal conflict and personal loss. That peaceful future now seems to be slipping away, and Monica’s absence from the cast only adds mystery. Whether her character meets a tragic fate, chooses a different path, or simply exists off-screen remains unknown. But whatever the reason, Kayce’s decision to reenter a world of danger suggests that the past is far from finished with him.
