'The Voice' Season 23: Niall Horan regrets not turning for EJ Michels' jaw-dropping performance
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'The Voice' Season 23 marks the last season for Blake Shelton and the singer doesn't want to miss out on even one talented singer. In the latest episode of the NBC show, aspiring singer EJ Michels stunned coaches with his vocals.
Michels performed a rendition of Adele's song 'Easy on Me' during the third night of Blind Auditions. However, his impressive high note made only Blake and Chance The Rapper's chairs turn. But Niall Horan later regrets the decision of not turning the chair for Michels.

Who is EJ Michels?
Michels hails from Utah. He has also worked with an alt-pop/rock band Foreign Figures. Michels also has an impressive record as a solo artist. His single 'Dark Room' released in collaboration with the band, has more than 660,000 streams on Spotify. Meanwhile, his other song, 'I'm Not a Rockstar' garnered more than 325,000 streams. Along with Foreign Figures, Michels has shared the stage with X Ambassadors, Lukas Graham, Kesha, and American Authors for a 2020 single called 'The Ugliest'. His 2020 song was based on Michels' first romance and heartbreak. Meanwhile, Michels latest single 'Jupiter' was released last September. He started singing back in 2015 and left it in the works until revisiting it during the writing process of the album. In the lyrics of his latest single, Michels expressed his feelings and said, "I really wanted a song that expressed unconditional love for the messiest parts of being human." However, he auditioned for 'The Voice' and shared that he formed a band with his brother and performed in front of 1,000 people. Just after his audition, Michels revealed that his mental health took a toll but he said he got the courage and came out noting it took a lot of vulnerability because he lives in a conservative area.
Niall Horan regrets missing out on potential superstar
Michels made a daring choice and performs Adele's song. However, his efforts didn't go unrecognized. Michels' delivered stunning vocals paired with his on-point piano accompaniment. His jaw-dropping high note during the song's chorus immediately gets approval and buzzers with two chairs around. Coaches Blake Shelton and Chance the Rapper later tried to do their best to get Michels into their teams. Chance praised Michels saying, "I got a great ear for music. I could tell that you were an instrumentalist before I saw that you were on piano because they do their runs differently typically. I also really like your heady upper register voice that you were using." The rapper added, "I think we can do great stuff together, and I cannot wait to be your Coach." Blake also gushed, "Your voice is so raw and honest." He added, "Sometimes people come out here and there's imperfections in their performance that just make you feel as a listener more of a connection. And there were times your voice is starting to break up a little bit, and all that did was create an angst in the performance and emotionally kind of had me on the edge." While Kelly and Niall didn't press the buzzer, they were left impressed with Niall regretting not turning his chair. He said, "EJ I don’t know who you will take but now I understand Angelo... Maxwell what all mean. I was pitching you If I have made the decision earlier." It was absolutely clear that Niall deeply regrets missing out on the potential superstar.
EJ Michels joins Team Blake
Blake's convincing strategy has paid off and Michels chose him over Chance. However, Blake also shared how he proud he is after Michels joined his team. Soon after the audition, Blake shared with NBC, "I'm really proud to get EJ on my team. There was a moment there where I thought he was going to go with Chance." He further added, "I love how open and honest and raw his voice is, and it's gonna be a lot of fun to pick songs for this guy because he has the ability to connect with the lyrics like very few Artists do." However, social media users also have the same feeling as Blake.
