'Sunny' Episode 8 Preview: Masa Sakamoto's past to finally answer some long-buried secrets
Contains spoilers and speculations for 'Sunny'
KYOTO, JAPAN: Apple TV+'s 'Sunny' delivers another episode stuffed with mysteries, subtly refraining from giving away any answers to settle our curiosity. Episode 7, released on August 14, primarily focuses on Mixxy (Annie the Clumsy) and Suzie Sakamoto's (Rashida Jones) turbulent friendship amid Sunny's odd behavior after getting released from the captivity of Hime (YOU).
Noriko Sakamoto (Judy Ongg) is still in jail with no intentions of coming out while Hime is on an important mission that could ensure her power within the gang. With too much happening all at once, we as viewers are still left in mystery, tasked to put together these pieces of the puzzle until the big reveal.
What to expect from 'Sunny' Episode 8?
We have high expectations from 'Sunny' Episode 8. The showrunners have plenty of things to address and we hope that we won't be circling another mystery. In the official synopsis for 'Sunny' Episode 8, Apple TV+ writes, "In the past, Masa slowly emerged from hikikomori."
While the streaming platform gives barely any hint of where the story might be headed in the next episode, here are all the things you can expect.
1) Suzie Sakamoto to learn new facts
'Sunny' Episode 8 will pick up from where Episode 7 ended. Suzie has a surprise encounter with Yuki Tanaka in the basement of a building where she had expected to find Masa and Zen (Fares Belkheir). Yuki (Jun Kunimura) was seen in Episode 1 and disappeared from the narrative until his mysterious return in Episode 7's climax.
Yuki is likely to answer some questions of Suzie and the viewers of the show. He was the one who gifted Sunny to Suzie. He could either reveal his purpose of giving her Sunny and how it could get fixed. Or at least, we hope to get an explanation of why he is hiding in a basement and the mystery behind a tracker on him as well. Being a roboticist and Masa Sakamoto's (Hidetoshi Nishijima) former colleague, he probably knows what happened at Imatech and if Yakuza was responsible for the plane crash.
2) A glimpse of Masa Sakamoto's past
As per the official synopsis, we will also get an insight into Masa's past, revolving around the time when he went into isolation and what was transcribed thereafter.
Seven episodes in, and we barely know anything about what kind of person Masa actually was! He could be the creator of Dark Manual, for all we know. But how did Masa's life entangled with Yakuza? Though this is a question meant to be addressed in the finale, we at least hope to understand Masa's psyche as a young person and what led him to draw that mysterious wolf design which is now the sign of Dark Manual.
3) Has Sunny turned into a dangerous hombot?
Sunny, who was once sweet and caring has now turned arrogant, selfish, and violent. Hime has messed up Suzie's robot who doesn't know how it fix it yet. Even the local shopkeeper refuses to help her in Episode 7 upon learning that Yakuza is involved.
For an isolated person like Suzie, Sunny's malfunction has been a major setback. She used to rely on him for emotional support. With its changed behavior, Suzie may reconsider the option of getting rid of Sunny, unless Yuki can help her out.
Nevertheless, it depicts how dangerous homebots can become if their code is manipulated, thus highlighting the dangers of AI.
