Apple TV+ announces release date for new mystery thriller 'Sunny' starring Rashida Jones

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Apple TV+ just announced the summer premiere date for 'Sunny' on Thursday, April 18. 

'Sunny' is a half-hour darkly comedic drama starring and executive produced by Rashida Jones. The 10-episode mystery thriller will debut with the first two episodes on Wednesday, July 10, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through September 4.

Katie Robbins introduces 'Sunny', a series adapted from Colin O'Sullivan's 'Dark Manual,' an award-winning Irish writer residing in Japan. This collaboration marks the second venture for Apple, A24, and Jones, following the success of Sofia Coppola’s 'On the Rocks'. Additionally, Jones starred in Apple's popular series 'Silo,' based on Hugh Howey’s bestselling dystopian trilogy.

What is the plot of 'Sunny'?

Suzie (Rashida Jones) is an American living in Kyoto, Japan. Her life turns upside down when her husband and son vanish during a mysterious plane crash. As a 'consolation', her husband’s electronics firm gives her a domestic robot, Sunny.

Initially, Suzie resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life. However, gradually, the pair becomes friends and they start to investigate the dark truth behind what happened to Suzie’s family. Soon, they are drawn into a dangerous world Suzie never knew existed.

The official synopsis similarly reads, "Sunny stars Jones as Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As “consolation” she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company."

The synopsis further reads, "Though at first, Suzie resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, gradually they develop an unexpected friendship. Together they uncover the dark truth of what really happened to Suzie’s family and become dangerously enmeshed in a world Suzie never knew existed."

Who stars in 'Sunny'?

Rashida Jones, who plays the grieving wife and mother Suzie in 'Sunny', was born in Los Angeles, California. However, Jones has roots in Reform Judaism and grew up in Bel Air. She made her professional acting debut in 'The Last Don', a 1997 mini-series based on the novel by Mario Puzo.

She has previously played Karen Filippelli in the American version of 'The Office' and was Ann Perkins in 'Parks and Recreation'. She’s also been in 'BlackAF', 'Toast of Tinseltown', 'Duncanville', 'Angie Tribeca', and 'Boston Public'.

Other cast members in 'Sunny' include Jun Kunimura, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Judy Ongg, and Annie the Clumsy.

'Sunny' will be available to stream on Apple TV+ from Wednesday, July 10, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through September 4.
