LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Set in feudal Japan, FX's ongoing historical drama 'Shōgun' is captivating audiences with its stunning visuals and intriguing characters.

The plot centers around the expedition of a brash English sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), who teams up with Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) to dominate power dynamics in medieval Japan.

Apart from Blackthorne and Toranaga, there are also ancillary characters who are garnering attention due to their unique personalities and compelling motives.

In recent episodes, Usami Fuji (Moeka Hoshi) has managed to raise eyebrows as well as earn love and appreciation from viewers with her bold and nuanced antics.

Usami Fuji's strength comes to the fore during an encounter with Kashigi Omi in 'Shōgun'

It was established early on in the series that Usami Fuji, the granddaughter of Toranaga's general, Toda Hiromatsu (Tokuma Nishioka), is reticent. Her situation worsens after she is faced with a traumatic experience.

Her husband insulted the regent council in an attempt to protect Toranaga's reputation. This act ultimately led to his demise. Fuji's baby was also put to death as a result of his father's actions, ending his lineage.

Without having a chance to grieve and recover from this tragedy, the woman was ordered to follow Toranaga and his men to the fishing village of Ajiro.

Later, she's instructed to become Blackthorne's consort, a move she accepted despite her initial reluctance. The new Hatomato, on the other hand, was skeptical and showed little interest in her.

However, his feelings concerning her shifted radically when she pulled a pistol on Kashigi Omi (Hiroto Kanai) during his disagreement with Blackthorne.

This was a watershed moment for Fuji. Blackthorne is left impressed with her bold act and offers to teach her how to use his English pistols later in the episode. He also gifts his consort his prized weapons as a sign of respect.

Fuji, who was seemingly broken and unsure about her future until then, found motivation to continue her life.

'Shōgun' fans adore Usami Fuji's personality

Fuji, who at first appeared to be a weak woman, has won over viewers' hearts due to her subsequent character development. Followers of the Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks-helmed series echoed this sentiment on X.

A fan shared, "The moment we all fell in love with Usami Fuji." While another fan remarked, "Can we all just agree that Moeka Hoshi as Usami Fuji in FXs Shogun was an absolutely phenomenal performance! Her character and the way it was played was out-fricken-standing! Probably one of my favorite performances I’ve seen in a show in a long time. Amazing."

"The end of episode 4 of Shogun was gnarly. I fucking knew Usami Fuji was going to be a huge factor. She had so much pain behind those eyes that she had to. Best scene the show has had yet," stated another enthusiast of the show.

Regarding her timid grin from the series, one admirer wrote, "Every awkward smile usami fuji gives us. i love her a little bit more with each one." Another admirer praised her as the finest character in the series and said, "Anyway her name is usami fuji shes the best character in shōgun."

The journey of Fuji has also been a hot topic on Reddit, with many fans now curious about how her role in the storyline will unfold in upcoming episodes.

A Reddit user commented, "The gun scene was goated and has been living in my head rent free but this episode she really got to flex the one liners. I also like the little physical gestures in the “morning after” scene. Even though I loved the cannons storyline I really wanted to see more of the household which is a testament to the writing/acting imo."

Another fan, alluding to the gun scene, stated, "A fantastic example is Fuji's portrayal in the scene where she defends John when the other man wants to take his guns. Her initial frustration with him quickly shifts to a protective instinct. This subtle switch, conveyed entirely through her actions and expressions, speaks volumes about her character and feels incredibly real. She is developing into a loyal consort and it’s f*****g amazing"

"She's drop dead gorgeous and a great actress with subtle movements. She quickly became a favorite after ep 4," wrote another admirer. Highlighting Fuji's tenacity, another fan commented, "She won me over as soon as the pointed the gun. This woman is put into the shittiest situation, and she still stands proud despite it, showing that she still has her own agency."

A critic complimented Moeka's portrayal of the role and said, "She's a minor character in the book and not even a major role in this show but the actress completely owns every scene she's in. So I guess "Well done!" to Hoshi Moeka!"

'Shōgun' premiered with its first two episodes on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, on Hulu and FX. The subsequent episodes are scheduled to be released weekly.
