'Shōgun' on FX: A guide to all the families, allies and rivals competing for ultimate power
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, FX's ongoing drama series 'Shōgun' immerses viewers in the world of feudal Japan.
The show focuses on a complicated web of power struggles in Japan, featuring risk-taking English sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) at the center of it all.
Thrown into a foreign land due to his greed for more resources and power, Blackthorne finds himself showing loyalty to Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), who is preparing to declare war against his dangerous political rivals following the death of Taikō, the supreme ruler of Japan.
Inevitably, this power struggle ensues every single character in the show. As such, it is vital to understand the key characters, their collaborators, and their rivals in this historical drama.
Below is a summary of the main competitors and allies in the race for ultimate power.
Lord Yoshii Toranaga
Lord Yoshii Toranaga has earned the reputation of a crafty strategist and is the lord of the Kanto region of Japan.
The fearsome warrior comes from a powerful samurai lineage and has commanded respect for decades.
He is ambitious to conquer Japan's throne and to gain the ultimate power of becoming 'Shōgun.'
However, his aim of achieving power is thwarted by the Council of regents, which opposes any single-family governing the nation.
However, he chooses to declare war and intends to exploit Blackthorne's support to win the power battle.
Ishido Kazunari
One of Toranaga's most notable adversaries is Ishido Kazunari (Takehiro Hira), who shares his ambition for dominance over all of Japan.
Ishido plans the impeachment of Toranaga through political scheming and his solid relationships with other Daimyos.
It was revealed throughout the series that his father was a strong lord who served under the Azai clan.
Kiyama ukon Sadanaga
Kiyama ukon Sadanaga (Hiromoto Ida) is in charge of the other members of the Christian Council.
The man's natural adversary in Toranaga's pursuit of ultimate dominance is his strong belief in maintaining a balance of power.
When he spearheads an attack on Toranaga's marching party in an effort to murder Blackthorne in Episode 3, it becomes abundantly clear that the man has negative opinions about Toranaga as well.
Ohno Harunobu
Ohno Harunobu (Takeshi Kurokawa), who was once a renowned warrior on the battlefield, is now a deeply religious man with leprosy.
The man is looking for treatment for his illness and always sits behind a veil to conceal himself.
Nonetheless, Ohno actively participates in his regent duties and has also contributed to the decision to impeach Torangana.
Sugiyama
Since nothing more substantial has been established about Sugiyama (Toshi Toda) in the show to date, it is difficult to assume anything about his alliances.
However, it is well known that the man is descended from a rich Japanese samurai family, which supports his status as a powerful player.
For the time being, he is neither Toranaga's friend nor enemy, as he has said nothing about it.
Who are Lord Yoshii Toranaga's rivals in 'Shōgun'?
Toranaga wants to consolidate his position of authority and become the ultimate ruler of Japan, but he must overcome obstacles from other families.
The Regents Council, which was also organizing his impeachment, stands as a big obstacle in his pursuit.
His chief adversary is Ishido, who, like Toranaga, aspires to seize ultimate power but realizes that Toranaga will never let him fulfill his ambition. Therefore, he metamorphosesly plots his impeachment.
In the first three episodes, it was evident that Toranaga and Ishido had a chilly relationship, which has only grown stronger as a result of Toranaga's shrewd resignation as regent.
Who are Lord Yoshii Toranaga's allies in 'Shōgun'?
Even though Toranaga is surrounded by formidable foes, the ferocious warriors still have some devoted followers.
One of his main allies is John Blackthorne, whom he has chosen to use as a pawn in order to accomplish his ultimate objective.
In the third episode, 'Tomorrow is Tomorrow', their partnership is established when Toranaga explicitly asks the Englishmen to be his allies and teach his men foreign warfare techniques, an offer that Blackthorne also accepts.
His other significant ally is Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), who, despite her conversion to Catholicism, steadfastly performs her duty of bridging the communication gap between Toranaga and Blackthorne.
Toranaga's most devoted associate has to be Hiromatsu (Tokuma Nishioka), a seasoned general.
Who has Kashigi Yabushige's allegiance in 'Shōgun'?
It is difficult to determine Kashigi Yabushige's (Tadanobu Asano) true allegiances. The complex character shows his loyalty to Toranaga, but his eyes are also set on favors from Ishido.
The fief's ruler secretly plots to use Blackthorne's ship to his own benefit ahead of the impending war.
Since the man is driven to expand his realm and is ambitious, it is reasonable to assume that, should Lord Ishido bestow upon him immense power, he could turn on Toranaga at any moment.
A look at the powerful families of 'Shōgun'
Japan's Taikō, Nakamura Hidetoshi (Yukijiro Hotaru), was aware that his death would leave a power vacuum in his wake. To ensure the safety of his son, Yaechiyo Nakamura, at Osaka Castle, he formed a council of five daimyō delegates, including Toranaga and Ishido.
So, let's look at the other three regents and how much influence they wield.
The series premiered with its first two episodes on February 27, 2024, on Hulu and FX. The subsequent episodes are scheduled to be released weekly.
