'Shōgun' Episode 2 Takeaway: John Blackthorne's startling disclosure rocks Lord Yoshii Toranaga's court
Spoilers for 'Shōgun'
OSAKA, JAPAN: FX's historical drama 'Shōgun', based on a novel of the same name, explores the complex dynamics of politics in feudal Japan.
The ten-part series, which has been keenly anticipated since its announcement in August 2018, has Rachel Bennette as supervising producer and Tom Winchester as producer.
The first episode of the series establishes that English pilot Major John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) is left at the mercy of the Japanese, who are indifferent to him because of his status as an outsider.
Amid a power struggle, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) plans to utilize Blackthorne to rise to the top.
John Blackthorne meets with Lord Yoshii Toranaga in 'Shōgun' Episode 2
After an adventure-filled voyage, Blackthorne arrives in Osaka and meets Lord Toranaga.
Blackthorne was concerned when Father Martin Alvito (Tommy Bastow) was requested to interpret their conversation due to his prior negative encounter with a poor translator.
Alvito, on the other hand, promises him that the discussion will be translated correctly and without error.
Blackthorne reveals that he is a Protestant-Catholic from England, whose country does not bow to the intimidation of Catholics.
Their intense conversation is interrupted when Ishido Kazunari (Takehiro Hira) expresses his displeasure with a barbarian's presence in the castle.
He suggests a public exhibition of Blackthorne with the tagline 'The Freak from the West' and asks that Toranaga spend the days that remain before being impeached in peace.
Toranaga sends Blackthorne to jail after witnessing Ishido's annoyance.
In prison, Blackthorne meets an anonymous Catholic priest who informs him about the firearms being smuggled from the Macao secret base—a crucial piece of information that the Lords are also unaware of.
Blackthorne sees it as an opportunity and intends to use it as a key to his freedom.
John Blackthorne gets attacked by an unknown assailant
Amidst the continuous struggle for dominance inside the castle, a group of men takes Blackthorne to execute him but Kashigi Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano) and his man intervene to rescue him.
Afterwards, Blackthorne is taken to Lord Toranaga and the two men once again begin conversing, where he draws a map and discloses to all those present that Spanish and Portuguese kings have the authority to claim any non-Catholic nation and to impose Catholic rule in its place.
Additionally, Blackthorne reveals that his objective is to defeat their shared foe. Toranaga tells him to leave the battle to save himself, but the pilot insists he thinks he can prevail.
Later on, during the night, a lady assaults Toranaga, but he kills her deftly with Blackthorne's help.
In the concluding moments of the episode, Toranaga informs Blackthorne that he knows who is pursuing the assault and that the attack was meant for him.
'Shōgun' premiered with its first two episodes on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, on Hulu and FX. The subsequent episodes are scheduled to be released weekly.
