John Blackthorne, along with his crew, finds himself at the shore of Japan and is met by a crew of Japanese soldiers who investigate them.

Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), who already has enough trouble on his plate owing to his potential impeachment, sends his general, Toda "Iron Fist" Hiromatsu (Tokuma Nishioka), to further probe the matter.

While Blackthorne does his best to express his intentions to the troops, the request falls flat due to the language barrier.

Kashigi Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano) then seeks the assistance of a priest to explain what Blackthorne was attempting to indicate, but the priest only translates a few words and labels him as a pirate.

Baffled by the claims, Blackthorne stomps upon his cross to prove otherwise. His actions win Yabushige's trust, who orders his man to clean the man.

Later, Blackthorne is brought to Hiromatsu, where the general becomes irritated with his unruly attitude. As Japanese troops manhandle Blackthorne, Vasco Rodrigues (Néstor Carbonell) intervenes and pulls him aside.

Blackthorne is informed by Rodrigues that he intends to introduce him to Lord Toranaga, the most powerful of all.

As they proceed on their journey, the ship is assaulted by a tremendous storm, forcing it to lose balance. Nonetheless, Blackthorne successfully controls the situation by drawing on his experience as a pilot.

Afterward, he asks for a search of Rodrigues and is sent, along with Yabushige and a few men, on a lookout.

When Yabushige spots Rodrigues at shore, amidst high tides, he resolves to descend from the cliff to rescue him, but his rope snaps, causing him to fall badly.

But in the face of hardship, he is able to rescue Rodrigues and himself, winning Blackthrone's respect, who bows his head in an act of showing respect.

The series premiered with its first two episodes on February 27, 2024, on Hulu and FX. The subsequent episodes are scheduled to be released weekly.
