During the confrontation, Douglas tells Maxine that he wanted to prove his worth along with the aim of providing her with the best. Unconvinced by his argument, she walks away in anger.

Later in the evening, as Maxine prepares for the Beach Ball, Douglas clears the air by mentioning that he hasn't given away their mansion as he doesn't have the authority to do so.

He admits that he can't do anything without her, including the use of Norma Dellacorte's (Carol Burnett) wealth as Maxine is her official conservator.

In order to win over her heart again, he offers her the crown of the pageant that she lost twenty years ago.

Even though Maxine and Douglas seem to have reconciled at this moment, it appears that their marriage isn't as smooth as it used to be, especially after Douglas' casual affair with Mitzi (Kaia Gerber).
