LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: This week on 'American Idol,' emotions ran high as more golden tickets and another platinum were awarded in Nashville, Las Vegas, and New Orleans. But when the day's final performer, Trey Louis, recounted his personal experience with a school shooting, Katy Perry couldn't help but express her rage at the system.

'American Idol,' the famous series that pioneered the music competition genre on television, returned to the airways for another season on ABC. Music industry heavyweights and celebrity judges Luke Bryan, Katy, and Lionel Richie are helping to determine whom America will eventually vote for to become the next vocal phenomenon. Ryan Seacrest, the Emmy Award-winning host, and producer, also returned to the popular competition series for its sixth season on ABC and 21st total. However, what happened during the show's second round of auditions prompted a debate among viewers.

Trey Louis makes Katy Perry fume and tear up

Trey Louis, a mattress salesperson from Santa Fe, Texas, is 21 years old. He performed 'Stone' by Whiskey Myers. "I love him," Lionel says as Trey's raspy baritone permeates the room. He also has a great hairstyle. When the judges offer Trey a standing applause, he becomes emotional. Luke makes the comparison to Chris Stapleton. Then we discover that Trey is a school shooting survivor. He lost a number of pals in this mass shooting, which killed eight students and two teachers. Katy bursts into tears and yells, "Our country has failed us! You should be here singing here because you love music – not because you lost eight friends! " The atmosphere dims, but Trey gets three yeses. He's on his way to Hollywood.

'Give us genuine emotions next time not a show'

Fans doubted Katy's reaction as they write, "I thought Katy was really crying, no tears.." One fan also tweeted, "oh of course here we go with the liberal BS narrative at the end of the show it's sad but this is BS shoving this crap in people's faces!!!" Another fan suggested, "katy gives us genuine emotions next time not a show.." Not happy with the discussion surrounding the issue, a viewer wrote, "Here we go.. politics."

While slamming Katy, a fan wrote, "Honestly… Katy perry is such a bad idol judge. I love Lionel & Luke, but Katy makes it all about her." Another unhappy fan wrote, "Well, there’s #AmericanIdol with the anti-gun mess again. Thankfully, @lukebryan kept his mouth shut. Mental health is the problem, not guns. People kill people." Again calling out Katy, a viewer wrote, "While what Katy Perry said about us needing to do better on these school shootings was right, we all know she lowkey wanted the ATTENTION on her… Good episode overall though." Speaking of Katy's reaction, a fan wrote, "Perry's theatrics aside, the power is at the voting booth. Due your due diligence, get off the couch and your devices and get out and Vote."

One fan also noted, "Not Katy Perry going off about shootings/guns, while she is constantly surrounded by security 24/7. I respect her as a judge on this show, but she can have several seats on this subject matter." Calling out the hypocricy, a fan wrote, "Wow Oscar for that performance #KatyPerry I will bet all the money in #Hollywood that your sweet ass is protected by security with guns. Too damn bad they put our most precious gifts from god in school with no protection. Social Justice Idiots! Bunch of #hypocrites."
