Is Nya in Top 14? 'American Idol' Season 22 judge Lionel Richie asks voters to 'rethink' their decision

'American Idol' Season 22 contestant Nya was in 'danger zone'

SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA: 'American Idol' Season 22 aspiring singers recently competed on the live stage to earn the judges' save after they failed to receive enough votes from the viewers. Among the contenders was Nyachomba Muchai-Kinya aka Nya failed to receive votes from the viewers to be able to advance to the Top 14.

However, Nya performed 'Water' by Tyla and instantly impressed the ABC show judges, especially Lionel Richie. He pointed out the viewers had made a mistake in voting for the aspiring singer and she deserved to be in the Top 14. 

Lionel expressed his frustration with voters for not putting her in the Top 14 and claimed it was a "star performance." He further noted, "Way to switch it up. You give great attitude. I just want America to rethink the situation." However, the ABC show judges decided to save Nya and put her through the latest round.

'American Idol' Season 22 star Nya's votes spark disappointment

'American Idol' Season 22 viewers were relieved after the ABC show judges, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan saved Nya. However, the critics were disappointed after Nya received fewer votes. Nya has become fans' favourite with her stirring performances every week.

Additionally, Nya's talent also impressed the ABC show host, Ryan Seacrest and he claimed that he played the aspiring singer's previous performance song, 'Georgia on My Mind' on the radio. Just before the judges' save announcement, the critic claimed, "Anyone see a pattern with these #AmericanIdol results … we need Nya and Ajii in top 14!!!"

Another person added, "How does Kayko get through and not Nya?!!!" Another X user said, "I am so bothered that #nya is not in the top 14. TF?? I hope the judges save her!!!" Another internet user penned, "Also hoping for a Nya save. Beautiful girl with a beautiful voice." Another viewer tweeted, "America you are nothing but dimwits for not putting Nya in the top 14 !!! #AmericanIdol ..What is wrong with you people!!!"

Nya dedicates emotional performance to her late father

'American Idol' Season 22 contestant Nya delivered an emotional performance dedicated to her father in the previous episode. Nya's father died in the Peach State when she was 16 and never got to hear her perform. She shared, "'Georgia on My Mind', that song really was my song for him."

Nya explained her song choice, "He passed away in Georgia. I definitely wish that he could be here right now." The aspiring singer further added, "I do want to dedicate the song to him. And I want to sing it so good. I want him to be proud, and I want him to be happy." However, judge Lionel Richie assured Nya that her dad was there to hear every "undeniable" note.

'American Idol' Season 22 airs on Sundays and Mondays at 8 pm ET on ABC.
