'Doubling Down With the Derricos': Karen and Deon address their grandparents' painful past
For the Derricos, it is safe to save that they are all a rather tight-knit family. With GG having been there through each of Karen's pregnancies, she is close to her son and daughter in law and has a special bond with her grandkids. This is why her decision not to move with the family is hard.
But as the family spent a day out on a farm, it became clear that South Carolina's history made it difficult for her to move and among other things. Karen and Deon used this outing as a teachable moment for their children, as they spoke to them about Black history, cotton picking and its ties to their own families.

After a fun day on a farm, complete with a corn maze and other games, Karen and Deon spoke to the children about what cotton-picking meant to them as Black people. Karen talked about how her grandmother had to do it and how her mother did as well. She told her children about how black children back then didn't have childhoods, especially not like the ones they have. Deon spoke about how even to this day, GG got emotional thinking about how her mother suffered because she had to pick cotton. Karen and Deon both wanted to make this a teachable moment for their children, with Karen reminding them that it was essential to know where they came from, to know where they are going.
