Does Bert get married? ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ Episode 5 ending explained
Bert’s stay in paradise becomes a major storyline in ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ episode 5. After arriving in a universe whose residents share their homes, belongings, and romantic partners, Bert meets Chana, who immediately finds him attractive. Their connection moves from one night together to a declaration of love, an agreement to be exclusive, and a wedding ceremony. However, the customs Bert introduces soon collide with the communal life Chana has always known.
Bert and Chana do not complete their wedding in the fifth episode. Chana accepts Bert’s proposal, while Stuart agrees to serve as best man and Denise prepares to officiate. The ceremony begins, but Simpa's objection triggers a dispute that spreads throughout the village before the marriage can be completed. Bert and Chana are engaged when the ceremony starts, but they never become husband and wife.
Their relationship begins after Chana invites Bert to spend the night with her. The next morning, Bert tells her he loves her, only to learn that she also plans to sleep with Simpa because her community does not practice monogamy. He explains that being exclusive would make him happy, and Chana later agrees to sleep only with him. Bert then proposes, even though Chana does not fully understand marriage or the expectations attached to it.
While Bert changes the village’s approach to relationships, Kripke introduces private property after residents use his shoes and bowl. He explains ownership and trade to people who previously shared everything, creating a problem for Stuart because the traveling machine requires red quartz. Stuart finds the instruction “use red quartz” hidden in bear droppings, but Gavel now refuses to part ways with his quartz necklace. Stuart later tries to steal it while Gavel sleeps, but Gavel wakes up and takes it back.
The wedding brings the concepts of monogamy and ownership into the same conflict. When Denise asks whether anyone objects, Simpa argues that people should not possess one another any more than they should possess shoes, clothes, or bowls. He grabs another villager’s ball to make his point, prompting a fight as residents argue over what belongs to whom. The ceremony stops, Chana is taken away in the confusion, and Bert cannot reach her before the group must leave.
The riot gives Stuart the opening he needs when the red quartz necklace breaks during the fight. He retrieves the stone, places it into the machine, and activates it, pulling Stuart, Denise, Bert, and Kripke into another universe. The escape ends any immediate chance of Bert resuming the ceremony or remaining with Chana. After they arrive at their next destination, Bert admits that he was happy in the village, confirming that losing her has affected him.
The machine drops the group inside Stuart’s comic book store in Pasadena, making it seem as though their journey is over. The surroundings look familiar, but Denise suddenly begins eating leaves from a houseplant. Her behavior suggests that they may not have returned to their original reality despite the store’s appearance. Episode 5 ends with Bert separated from Chana while the leaf-eating clue leaves the group’s homecoming unconfirmed.
