Who returns in ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ episode 3? Every ‘Big Bang Theory’ cameo explained
‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ Episode 3 transports its central characters into a realm governed by magic, bringing two more performers from ‘The Big Bang Theory’ into the spinoff. One return turns a former member of the sitcom’s main cast into a threat, while the other places a recurring guest character at the center of a magical fight. Their appearances continue the series’ pattern of presenting alternate versions of familiar characters rather than bringing them back unchanged.
The episode, titled ‘Spoiler: Bert Is Magic,’ places Stuart Bloom and his companions in a magical alternate universe where Bernadette is hiding a dangerous identity. Melissa Rauch returns as Bernadette Rostenkowski in Episode 3. Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) and Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie) meet her while looking for someone who can repair their damaged reality-hopping machine. Bernadette is known as a sorcerer in this universe, but she tells them that she can no longer perform magic.
This Bernadette does not use Howard Wolowitz’s surname and appears without her husband from ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ She claims that the Wizards Guild of America expelled her for using magic during a strike. Explaining what the wizards wanted, Bernadette says, “Better dental, residuals for eternal spells.” The storyline refers to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, during which series creators Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and Zak Penn participated.
Bernadette tells Stuart that a reversal spell can restore her powers, but it requires the “blood of an innocent.” Stuart gives her his blood without knowing that she is a demon. Once her powers return, she grows to a size that allows her to tower over Pasadena and crush people while searching for the machine built by Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper. The explanation about the strike may also have been part of Bernadette’s plan. During an interview published by Deadline, Prady said, “She makes up that story to get them to give her the blood. I think she made up the whole thing.” Penn agreed with his interpretation and said, “Yeah, she’s a demon.”
Wil Wheaton is the episode’s second returning ‘Big Bang Theory’ performer. As he did throughout the original sitcom, Wheaton plays a version of himself. The alternate Wil possesses magical abilities and arrives after Stuart has unknowingly helped Bernadette regain her powers. Wheaton reveals Bernadette’s real identity and confronts Stuart over what he has done. His arrival leads to a magical showdown with Bert Kibbler (Brian Posehn), who has also acquired powers in this universe. Their battle ends with Bert killing Wheaton, adding another death in the group’s journey through the damaged multiverse.
Rauch’s return follows the approach used for Kunal Nayyar’s Raj Koothrappali in Episode 1 and Kaley Cuoco’s Penny in Episode 2. Raj was imprisoned by Barry in a ruined reality, while Penny became a resistance leader in a world where she was reunited with Zack Johnson instead of Leonard. The creators designed the returning characters as versions the actors had not played before.
Discussing how the original cast members responded to the idea, Lorre told Deadline, “It was fun to do something different, that was part of the promise, come and play with us, and we’ll make sure that you’re playing a version of your character you never got to play before, an entirely different approach to the character, and that was fun for the actors”
Episode 3 takes that idea further by making Bernadette the episode’s central threat and giving Wheaton powers that ultimately lead to his death. Bernadette remains at large when the episode ends, leaving Stuart and the others to face the consequences of restoring her magic.
