'Must be his good looks': 'American Idol' fans slam Katy Perry for favoring Michael after poor performance
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: On Sunday, April 9, episode of 'American Idol', Michael Williams, whom the judges predicted would make it to the Top 10, walked the stage. As the young singer makes it to the next round, fans accuse judge Katy Perry of favoring him over his looks after his subpar performance.
Michael immediately captivated judge Katy Perry with his sweet falsetto during the Season 21 premiere of 'American Idol' on February 19. Katy was enthralled by Michael's slow crooned rendition of Bruno Mars' 2010 song 'Talking to the Moon', jokingly messing with her hair and stroking her wedding ring as she listened to his performance. Katy listed off singers that the young singer reminded her of, including Shawn Mendes, Harry Styles, and Michael. After a lackluster performance on Showstoppers Pt 1 on the April 9 episode, people are questioning if he will make it through only on the basis of his looks.

Michael struggles to pull stop at Showstopper round
During his audition, the judges ranked him in the top ten. This former 'The Voice' contestant has a lovely voice, but he was a little intimidated by performing in front of a live band. "I kept losing him in the backgrounds," Luke Bryan explains. Katy believes he selected the wrong song.
Katy describes his voice as "controlled," but she didn't hear his distinct qualities in this current performance. "I felt like I lost you," Katy says to Michael. "We have to let you go....into the Top 24," Katy explains. "We really believe in you." Despite a poor Showstopper performance, the judges put him through to the next round.
'How this dude keeps progressing with such average vocals'
While criticizing Michael's performance, a viewer wrote, "Michael has a gorgeous tone but this felt a bit too breathy for me and he sounds pretty sick. He still deserves to move forward because he's got marketability and he's capable of redeeming himself. He was still very emotionally connected with the audience." Another person added, "I wouldn't have put him through. He's fortunate to get there . . ." Agreeing with Katy, a fan wrote, "He struggled a lot with that song. It was too high for him. Maybe, if he'd opted for an acoustic, stripped-down version of "Angels Like You" (in the right key for him), he could have done much better." A fourth person wrote, "He needs more practice."
One criticism further read, "I dunno I love his battle with Allegra but Im not gonna sugarcoat that this didn't hit hard. He sounded too tired." One disappointed fan wrote, "My expectation for this guy was high...it was not my fav performance from him." One viewer asked, "I really don't get it....can someone please explain how this dude keeps progressing with such average vocals." Seeing how Katy reacts to his performance, made fans conclude, "It must be his good looks Perry likes, bc there's really nothing impressive about his voice."
'American Idol' Season 21 airs every Sunday and Monday at 8 pm ET on ABC.
