When 'American Idol' host Ryan Seacrest announced that Jay Copeland did not make it to the Top 5 round of the show's season 20, it would be a gross understatement to say that fans were upset. The Platinum Ticket holder garnered pretty mixed reactions from both the judges and fans throughout his stint on the ABC singing competition.

Despite his occasional slip-ups, the 23-year-old managed to continue to keep the fans hooked to him with his sunny disposition and impeccable style. After earning his spot on the Top 7 round, under the mentorship of Will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas fame, Jay worked on modifying his pitch and various other vocal techniques which helped him deliver a pretty impressive final performance. The Top 7 round was split into two sub-challenges, the participants had to first sing a popular TikTok song, and for the second part, they would have to dedicate a song to their mother or the mother figures in their life.

For the first round, Jay chose Whitney Houston's 'I Have Nothing', and for the second round, he dedicated Boyz II Men's 'A Song for Mama' to his mother. Both the performances were well-received by the show's judges- Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan, who declared that he was finally coming into his own self, as well as the 'American Idol' fans. So, when it was announced that Jay was being eliminated alongside Christian Guardino, fans were left feeling shocked and upset and declared that they were done with the show.

A fan tweeted, "What jay went home #AmericanIdol is a complete joke im done." "Mediocre a** fritz gets saved over JAY you gotta be kidding me I’m sick as hell #AmericanIdol," wrote a fan. Another fan added, "American Idol sucks! Will not be watching ever again! Fritz should have left and Jay should have not been voted off #AmericanIdol."
