Bryan Cranston’s apology to ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ reboot fans has a wild reason behind it—you’ll see why
There are actors who slowly build their reputations in specific genres over time, and then there’s Bryan Cranston. He somehow managed to own both comedy and drama without missing a beat. Long before he had audiences on edge in ‘Breaking Bad’ or keeping things tense in ‘Your Honor,’ he was making people laugh as Hal in 'Malcolm in the Middle.' Hal was not your average TV dad. He was unpredictable, a little over-the-top, completely devoted to his family, and head-over-heels for his wife, Lois, played by Jane Kaczmarek. So when talk of a revival started picking up steam, fans were curious but also a bit cautious. Would it feel the same? Would Hal still be, well, Hal? According to Cranston, the answer is a pretty clear yes, and maybe even more than some viewers bargained for.
While speaking at a red carpet premiere for the revival, ‘Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair’, Cranston chatted with Entertainment Tonight reporter Emily Curl about stepping back into the role. Curl's question was simple enough: “Hal, he really is an unpredictable dad to say the least. When you signed on, how prepared were you to revisit Hal and revisit this character? Were you game for anything?” He responded, “Oh, I know the ethos of ‘Malcolm in the Middle’, which is, Hal’s going to be naked at some point during this thing. And in fact, we get it twice. Hal is going to be naked twice. I’d like to apologize ahead of time for all the viewers. Turn away. Cover your kids’ eyes. But yeah, it happens.”
Now, if you watched the original series, this probably doesn’t come as a shock. Hal had a habit of finding himself in the most awkward situations, often with very little clothing involved. One of the more memorable moments from the earlier run had him standing in the kitchen without a stitch on, as Lois shaved his body hair. Apparently, the revival isn’t interested in toning things down. Instead, it’s leaning right back into the same offbeat energy that made the original series stand out. And Cranston seems fully on board with that approach, even if it means poking fun at himself in the process.
It’s that willingness to go all in, no matter how ridiculous the moment, that made Hal such a standout character in the first place. The revival, titled 'Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair,' is set to bring the family back together for a four-episode run. Rather than stretching things out over a full season, the show is keeping it tight, which could work in its favor. A short format means less filler and more focus on the kind of humor fans remember. The revival premieres on April 10 and will be available on Hulu and Disney+, giving fans a couple of options to tune in. And of course, you’ll need a subscription to one of the streaming platforms to watch.
