Who is Bao Tranchi?

Bao is in the fashion industry for more than 20 years. She was born in Vietnam but left her native when she was 10 months old. She came to America with her family for a better life. Bao got her sewing skills from her mother who used to work in sweatshops in downtown LA. She bagged her first offer at Anne Klein just after graduating from Otis School of Design. However, Bao opted for styling and wardrobe gigs, working with Madonna stylist Arianne Phillips on films such as 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' and 'Charlie's Angels', as reported by LA Weekly. Things changed when her mother passed away in 2010. Photographer Brandon Showers, a business and life partner moved to Vietnam to work on movies and photography. Sometimes change is good and it was the same in Bao's case as well. After moving to Vietnam, Bao gave birth to their daughter, Sadie, and became a fashion sensation in the film industry. Meanwhile, her husband Showers became the creative director of Hearst Vietnam's fashion publications. Though she again left her native land with her family, her body changes during the pregnancy inspired Bao's now-signature curve-enhancing aesthetic. And as mentioned in her profile, published by Netflix Tudum, Bao wanted to "celebrate [Graham’s] body in a way that was, up to then, only reserved for sample size bodies." She gushed about her success, "what was appropriately sexy for a plus-sized woman" and became a "huge viral fashion moment." Bao's designs showcase and empower the modern female through fashion. Her latest designs feature skin-baring cutouts and bondage-esque use of straps and lacing. Moreover, Bao has been experimenting with new colors and textures, adding velvet to the mesh, elastic, and lining materials she's known for.

Bao Tranchi's big projects

The Costume and Fashion Designer's passion to create the most memorable designs brings her to some of the very famous celebrity clients. Since she kicked off her design career, she has styled some famous music videos. Bao has also worked as a costume designer on films like 'Charlie’s Angels' and 'The Greatest Beer Run Ever', 'Once Upon a Time in Vietnam', and 'Journey from the Fall'. Bao's first celebrity client was Selena Gomez. The songstress sported her strappy black bodysuit for Taylor Swift's 'Bad Blood' video. After that, her line exploded. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez sported Bao Tranchi's design featuring velvet birds on the mesh that beautifully and bodaciously covers her breasts on her 48th birthday. Nicki Minaj, Laverne Cox, and Gigi Hadid have also been a client for Bao. Moreover, Ashley Graham wore Bao's stunning gown to the 2016 Vanity Fair Oscar Party.
