The latest episode of ‘American Idol’ Season 24 didn’t exactly follow the usual script, as it kept everyone on their toes from the very first minute. What was supposed to be a routine results night last week turned into a bit of a waiting game after a hiccup with vote-counting delayed the elimination announcement. The previous week featured the Top 14 performing during the ‘Songs of Faith’ episode, where fans showed up in big numbers to cast their votes. The volume of votes ended up being so high that the production team couldn’t lock in accurate results in time.

So when the April 6 episode finally aired, there was no easing into it. The show jumped straight into the tough part. Host Ryan Seacrest opened the night with news that had been hanging in the air for days. Instead of warming up viewers with performances, he got right to business and revealed which contestants wouldn’t be moving forward. The Top 14 lineup included a mix of strong voices and varied styles. Among the women were Kyndal Inskeep, Keyla Richardson, Hannah Harper, and Rae, while the male contestants included Jake Thistle, Daniel Stallworth, Jesse Findling, Braden Rumfelt, Brooks Rosser, Philmon Lee, Lucas Leon, Jordan McCullough, Chris Tungseth, and Julian Kalel.

Within minutes of the episode starting, Seacrest announced the two names that would be sent home: Julian Kalel and Jake Thistle. Their journey on the show came to an end before the night’s main performances even began. Once the eliminations were out of the way, the competition hit the reset button. The remaining 12 contestants stepped into the next segment: the Judges’ Song Contest. This year, the theme was focused on ‘90s hits. Judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan each secretly selected songs for every contestant.

Each singer received three options (one from each of the judges), but here’s where it got interesting: they had to pick one to perform without knowing who chose it. On top of that, they were asked to guess which judge was behind their selected track. And there was more at stake than just a good performance. The judge whose picks got chosen the most earned bragging rights by the end of the episode. However, more importantly, the winning judge will have the power to save one contestant from elimination. That safety net can make all the difference, especially as the competition gets more intense.
