'Survivor' 50 to bring back thrilling live reunion show after six years but there's a bittersweet catch
'Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans' will return to the screens on February 25, 2026, on CBS. The show's milestone Season 50 has decided to bring back the live reunion show, which has been absent from the series for the past six years. It was a highlight of the reality series during its first 20 seasons, but had to be cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But longtime host and executive producer, Jeff Probst, revealed at the 2026 Golden Globes that the fan-favorite segment will return to close out 'Survivor' 50. Does this mean the much-loved segment will return for good? Probably not. It is being brought back for the upcoming installment after viewers voted for it as part of Survivor 50’s “In the Hands of the Fans” theme, and it will take place in Los Angeles on May 20.
During the Live Reunion show in past seasons of 'Survivor,' all the contestants returned for a live taping at either New York City or Los Angeles, months after leaving the island. Probst tallied the jury votes and crowned the winner of the season before they all gathered for a post-finale reunion segment to discuss their biggest moments from the show. For the last six years, however, the winners were announced on the island as the reunion show was taped immediately after the final tribal council.
Since the “new era” of 'Survivor,' which began with Season 41 in 2021, an aftershow replaced the live reunion and was filmed on the island itself, right after the votes were counted. Although the change was mandated by safety precautions during COVID-19, it continued post-pandemic thanks to convenience and budget. The change drew criticism from fans who believed the new format lacked glamor. They also felt the reunions were rather surface-level, as contestants would have to share their reactions without having seen the entire season or taking time to process their experience.

While speaking to Variety's Emily Longeretta at the SCAD TVFest, Probst revealed that taping the live show was a logistical nightmare as the production crew had to undergo an extensive planning process for months. The new format saved time and money that would be spent on designing and constructing the set. He explained that, “You have to sometimes put your producer hat on and say, ‘This show costs millions. This one costs nothing.' The content is arguably just as interesting. It’s not the pomp and circumstance, but it’s interesting because they’re still raw. They haven’t had the time to go home and read social media. So you make the argument, and those are the decisions you’re gonna have to face in your own art. That’s the live show issue for me. It would be really fun to do, but it’s millions of dollars. And if it’s not 50, I’m not sure we’ll do it again in 51,” reported Parade.
In an all-new twist, winners of the Survivor50 Challenge, who find the immunity idol hidden across 50 states, will be eligible to earn an exclusive invite to watch the live finale in Los Angeles. As it may not return for future installations, this season's live reunion show is bound to be memorable.
