In all time zones, the 95th Academy Awards will commence airing on ABC on Sunday, March 12 at 8 pm. Fans of 'American Idol' won't, however, be denied their dose on that day. That is, if fans can remain up past midnight (at least on the East Coast)! Amara Valerio describes being "Kanye'd" at a high school graduation celebration a few years back in a clip from the 'American Idol' post-Oscars episode. She was supposed to recite the National Anthem, but as soon as she started, a girl in graduation attire snatched the microphone from her hands. “Hi. This is my senior graduating class, and I deserve to sing the anthem!" Sadly, she was unable to perform it for her own commencement due to Covid-19 shutdowns the following year.
Lionel, Katy, and Luke, the judges, watched the internet footage and were appalled. The judges started calling out names as the performer belted out a soulful rendition of 'Bust Your Windows' by Jazmine Sullivan. Luke pledges to send the Navy Seals he is familiar with to find her. Karen, he's certain of that. Amara acknowledges that it is an "S" moniker after the performance, and the panel correctly predicts "Sarah." Looking into the camera, Katy says, "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, But you’re finished messing with our girl!" The judges then exclaim, "You're going to Hollywood!" in unison.

What happened in 'American Idol' Season 21 Episode 3?
The following is a summary of the other Idol contestants who made it to Hollywood week 3:
The first contestant to appear at the New Orleans tryouts is 25-year-old Sara Beth from Roseville, California, who has a youthful appearance. She is a stay-at-home mother of three who has made the decision that it is time to follow her goals. She acknowledges that she is "not really a musician" and just sings along with her pals at karaoke. Sara Beth performs Amy Winehouse's 'You Know I'm No Good' but Katy isn't pleased.
She instructs the candidate to perform Elton John's 'Bennie and the Jets' and demonstrate her vocal range. She essentially imitates Haley Reinhart's performance from Season 10 note for note. Although Katy refers to her as an "accidental American Idol," she cautions that she won't get very far if it's not her goal. Luke says "Yes" because he adores her. Sarah Beth may not have the necessary desire, so Lionel responds "No." Sarah Beth is sent to Hollywood by Katy after she breaks the deadlock!
A 20-year-old driver from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, whose name is Tanner Charles enters the stage. For his partner Delaney's birthday, he will perform an original composition that he believes to be his own. She enters the space as Katy yells, "This is TV! It's television! Tanner plays the song 'Golden Eyes' about Delaney while seated at the piano and serenades her. Everyone finds it to be a moving moment, and at the conclusion, Katy gets up and playfully breaks down in tears. It is "exceptional," adds Katy, adding, "You are an ARTIST!" When Lionel says, "You have the sausage," everyone breaks out in laughter. Luke comments, "You’re one of the best I’ve seen at telling the story. Your instincts are perfect." Tanner is moving to Los Angeles.
A 22-year-old waiter from Nashville, Tennessee, named Mikey Burson is performing 'Cold As Ice' by Foreigner for his tryout. He is accompanied on the keyboard by his mother, who is also his musical companion. Their long, curly hair appears to be detracting from Katy, but Mikey continues to croon. Even so, he receives a round of praise from the judges. It's got all the vibes of being a little bit loungey, Luke eventually acknowledges. Mikey is prevented from going to Hollywood by Katy and Luke because they claim that he has a karaoke star-like vocal talent.
Music instructor Adin Boyer, 22, is from Lake Forest, California. He was given the autistic diagnosis when he was two years old. Adin's parents, who are also artists, recognized his flawless pitch and put him in music lessons. As a result, he has received years of classical training. Adin performs his original composition, 'Predicament', for an audition tonight because it has helped him survive. He is a talented musician, but the tune has a Broadway feel to it. "I could listen to that all night," Lionel exclaims. "What else could Adin possibly do," thinks Katy. Luke believes that their keyboard playing is among the finest he has ever heard, but his vocal performances need to improve. Adin will be sent to Hollywood after the judges decide to take a chance on him!
Wé Ani, a singer from Harlem, New York, is 23 years old. Luke wonders if she does voiceovers because she has a distinctive speaking accent. Although it might not seem like she can sing, seasoned followers of reality TV singing contests like myself will know this formidable performer as Wé McDonald, who first gained notoriety on Season 11 of 'The Voice', where she finished third as a member of Team Alicia Keys when she was just 17 years old. Today, she's singing Demi Lovato's 'Anyone', and as soon as she begins to perform, her voice completely changes. Katy's irises widen in surprise. She's "amazing," and Lionel finds her "ridiculous." The judges give Wé a resounding "YES!" to Hollywood.
Marybeth Byrd, a radio host from Armorel, Arkansas, is 21 years old. She is crooning The Steeldrivers' 'If It Hadn't Been for Love' "with a little bit of pop flare to it." She allows her country voice to rise as Luke screams with delight. "You opened up and it was correct. Perio," adds Lionel. "Period.” "I’m talking about the first note," Luke says. "You’ve got it. From your name to the presentation. This is why," says Katy, adding, "we go to the nooks and crannies and leave no American Idol unturned." Marybeth, a young lady from a 300-person tiny village, is moving to Hollywood! Katy continues, "She’s for sure Top 10." A short video shows Bre, a 27-year-old dueling pianist from Burbank, California, duetting with Lionel on the tune 'All Night Long'. Her route to Hollywood is approved by the judges.
Los Angeles-born college student Olivia Soli is 20 years old. She takes a seat at the keyboard to perform 'Hello', a standard by Lionel. Her original performance, which Lionel labels the "best so far in this audition," astounded the judges. Luke calls it "tremendous," to which Katy responds, "You put Lionel Richie out of a job! You have a tremendous voice. So much soul. The judges send Olivia straight to Hollywood!
Originally from Hartsville, South Carolina, artist Preston Duffee is 21 years old. When he was 12 years old, his father gave him an instrument for Christmas, and he began performing. About two years ago, Preston's mother committed suicide after battling bipolar illness. She was actually discovered dby his sister after hearing the gunfire. Since then, music has both rescued Preston's life and allowed him to place food on the table. He performed an original song titled, 'Something to Write About'. Lionel praises Preston's composing skills after Preston receives a standing applause. Luke was more struck by Preston's songwriting skills than by his singing. Preston is on his way to Hollywood!
A Vancouver native with a degree in performing arts, Emma Busse is 20 years old. Following a few excessively dramatic tryouts, the judges were wary of musical theater acts. She catches the judges off guard by singing Elton John's 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' to them. "I think we can save this one!" Katy exclaims, and orders her to shake the Broadway out. Luke claims that the gradual vibrato must stop. The judges want to see what Emma can accomplish in Hollywood, despite the fact that she has some things to "unlearn!"
Irish-born 24-year-old Keelin presently resides in New York. She has a peculiar demeanor and claims that the entire universe is her platform. She enjoys speaking things into reality and making them visible. Keelin performed an original song named 'Don't Call Me' for her tryout. In Katy's opinion, Keelin has a promise and reminds her of Meghan Trainor. Luke says "No," but Lionel says "Yes," so Keelin goes to Hollywood.
Elijah McCormick, a 24-year-old ophthalmology trainee from Raeford, North Carolina, performed the final tryout of the night. He has been performing since he was six years old, but high school is when he really started to enjoy it. He was involved in a terrible automobile mishap on the day of his graduation. Elijah had to rediscover how to move and speak. Elijah passed out a couple of times on the way to the hospital. He underwent 10 operations and spent 79 days in the infirmary. Elijah is performing 'Bless the Broken Road' by Rascal Flatts for his interview. Lionel breaks down in tears as he hears him sing! Before Luke equates Elijah's style to the late Willie Spence, each judge gives him an embrace. Lionel describes it as an experience he will never forget. Katy claims that Elijah's tale is "just the beginning" as he makes his way to Hollywood.
'American Idol' Season 21 Episode 4 will air on ABC on March 12, 2023, the following Oscar broadcast.
