'Marshals' cast guide: A look at all characters in 'Yellowstone' spinoff as Kayce Dutton's story continues
The 'Yellowstone' spin-off series 'Marshals' took a detour from Paramount+ and debuted on CBS on Sunday. It is the fourth television series from Taylor Sheridan's popular franchise and is executive produced by Sheridan, Luke Grimes, David Hutkin, Michael Friedman, and Ron Burkle, among others.
Created by Spencer Hudnut, the neo-Western drama series chronicles Kayce Dutton's new life away from the ranch, as he decides to join the US Marshals to protect his home state of Montana. He is joined by an ensemble cast of 'Yellowstone' alums as well as new characters that shift the narrative from a family-centered drama to an action-heavy procedural thriller. As the series premiered its first episode recently, let's take a look at the characters who join Kayce on his latest adventure.
Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton
'Marshals' features the 41-year-old actor-musician in a leading role as the cowboy Kayce Dutton, a role he reprises from 'Yellowstone.' Following his wife's death, Kayce joins the U.S. Marshal to help solve crimes in Montana. In doing so, he 'finds a purpose and a reason to get up in the morning, and that comes from his old SEAL buddy,' the actor said in February at the Television Critics Association virtual press day. Furthermore, Luke Grimes played the Navy SEAL Marc Lee in 'American Sniper' and also starred as Christian Grey's brother, Elliot, in the 'Fifty Shades' saga. Before his breakout role, he had recurring roles in 'True Blood' and 'Brothers & Sisters.'
Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton
Kayce's young son, Tate, has gone from a young child on 'Yellowstone' to a teenager on 'Marshals.' In the premiere episode, he channels his grief over his mother's death by actively demonstrating against toxic mining at the Broken Rock reservation, which led to Monica developing cancer. He tells his dad in the episode, "After how much Mom suffered, we should be leading the charge here — not waving the white flag." In 2022, Brecken starred as the son of Kevin Pearson (played by Justin Hartley) in 'This Is Us' and also appeared in 2025's mystery thriller, 'Lifeline.'
Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin
Pete Calvin is a former Navy SEAL who met Kayce when they worked together in his team and recruited the cowboy to the U.S. Marshals at the end of episode 1. On February 24, Logan told Entertainment Weekly that he signed on for the role as he was "fond of the soldier's story, especially the vet and what they go through. More than anything, what tipped the scales for me was the Indigenous stories that they were planning on telling."
The South Carolina native began his career playing guest roles in 'Law & Order,' '24,' and 'The O.C.' between 2005 and 2016. He played the lead in 'Traveler,' 'Dark Blue,' and the neo-noir series 'Quarry.' He has also starred in films like Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus,' 'Spider-Man: Homecoming,' 'The Invitation, and will next be seen in Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey.'
Arielle Kebbel as Belle Skinner
Belle Skinner is an ATF agent who was described as 'Martha Stewart in cowboy boots' during the auditions. Arielle described her character in an exclusive interview with TV Insider as follows: "Belle comes from a very wealthy, highly publicized family. She carries her family’s secrets and has a path that she keeps very secret. She’s not sure who she can trust. Having this job, she worries about her family and how to protect them. She appears to be put-together, but inside, she’s an adrenaline junkie trying to find her outlet."
The actress gained recognition by playing supporting roles on 'Gilmore Girls,' 'The Vampire Diaries,' and '9-1-1.' She displayed her comedic chops in 'John Tucker Must Die,' and 'Think Like a Man,' and took on dramatic roles in 'The Grudge 2' and 'Fifty Shades Freed.'
Ash Santos as Andrea Cruz
Andrea Cruz is a Bronx-born U.S. Marshal who is transferred to Montana following a scuffle at her previous job. However, she doesn't adjust to her new role easily and clashes with Belle right away. As per the same TV Insider interview, the two women 'don't see eye to eye,' but 'they learn to care for one another' as the season of 'Marshals' unfolds. Moreover, the 32-year-old actress played Coco in the second and third seasons of 'Mayor of Kingstown,' another Sheridan production. She is also remembered for playing Emily in 'American Horror Story: Apocalypse' and Nia Washington in 2025's short-lived medical drama, 'Pulse.'
Tatanka Means as Miles Kittle
In 'Marshals,' Miles 'Dust Cloud' Kittle is a former Broken Rock reservation police officer who "got tired of busting his own people and felt he'd be better served protecting them as a Marshal," showrunner Hudnut said of the character. Meanwhile, Means appeared in Martin Scorsese's Oscar-nominated film 'Killers of the Flower Moon' in 2023. The actor-comedian also starred in 'Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials' and in Kevin Costner's directorial venture, 'Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,' and its sequel, both released in 2024. He also had recurring roles in 'FBI: Most Wanted,' 'Banshee,' 'Reservation Dogs,' and 'Outer Range' on the small screen.
Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater
Birmingham reprises his role as the leader of the Broken Rock Reservation, Thomas Rainwater, in 'Marshals.' He told Entertainment Weekly that the show's emphasis on Montana's indigenous population is integral to the story. "We get into some subject matter that is very realistic and [features] present-day challenges for the res. We're going to address real-life things — mining companies trying to come along, drug cartels. Rainwater has a lot more on his plate than what was in 'Yellowstone." Birmingham played Billy Black in the 'Twilight' saga and appeared as Virgil White on 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.' He also had guest-starring roles on 'NCIS: Los Angeles,' 'Nip/Tuck,' and 'House of Cards.'
Mo Brings Plenty as Mo
Mo Brings Plenty returns to the 'Yellowstone' universe in the spin-off sequel after playing Mo, Rainwater's right-hand man, in the flagship series. The actor was previously seen in shows like 'House of Cards,' 'The American West,' and 'Hell on Wheels' as well as in films such as 'Jurassic World: Dominion,' 'Cowboys & Aliens,' and 'Dead Man's Hand.' He also took on the roles of Native affairs coordinator on 'Yellowstone' and American Indian affairs coordinator on its prequel series, '1923.'
