Taylor Sheridan’s 'Mayor of Kingstown' is facing an ending he didn't choose and it raises concern
Well, this is not the kind of update anyone wanted with their scroll. Taylor Sheridan’s exit news from Paramount had left fans squinting nervously at the future of his TV empire. And now it looks like one of his most intense shows may already be paying the price. It’s because ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ is heading toward an ending that feels rushed, awkward, and not entirely planned on its own terms. According to a report cited by ScreenRant, Paramount's Chair of Direct to Consumer, Cindy Holland, moved forward with canceling ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ despite Sheridan’s objections. Furthermore, Holland, who began her role a year ago, has not ordered any other sows from Sheridan.
That decision has landed like a thud for viewers who watched the series fight its way back from a rocky start and finally find its footing. When 'Mayor of Kingstown' premiered on Paramount+ in 2021, the response was, to say the least, divided. Some people found it so dull that they were exhausted, while others were unsure of its rhythm. Additionally, many people were unsure how it handled its unflinching look at the American prison economy. However, 'Mayor of Kingstown' did not give up. When Season 4 rolled around, all doubts were gone. In fact, the new set of episodes premiered with a 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.
Momentum was finally on its side. Then came the twist. Earlier this month, it was announced via Paramount+ that ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ would be returning for Season 5, but that it would also be the last. That alone was tough news. The real sting came later, when it became clear the final run would be shortened to just eight episodes. Eight episodes. That’s it. The series is about Michael McLusky, played by Jeremy Renner. He’s a man working as a fixer in a Michigan town where prisons drive everything, be it money, power, or survival. Michael and his family don’t just live alongside incarceration. They profit from it.
The way the series handled the subject has always been up for debate, but that is what made it addictive. Renner, who is no less famous globally for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has not commented on the news. Neither has Sheridan. In this particular instance, silence is louder than any words. What makes the situation more complicated is that Sheridan isn’t slowing down elsewhere. His creative slate remains packed. New projects are still on the horizon. They include ‘Marshals’, a ‘Yellowstone’ spin-off, and ‘The Madison’, a standalone series.
Then there’s ‘Landman’, which just wrapped its second season. Reviews were split, but the audience still showed up in massive numbers. According to Puck, the series pulled in 1.3 billion minutes of viewing during the week of January 3 alone. Also, there’s no premiere date yet for the final season of ‘Mayor of Kingstown’. For now, we only know that when Mike McLusky returns, it will be for the last time.
