Kristen Stewart eyes the director's chair for a 'Twilight' re-adaptation: 'I'll do the remake...'
Kristen Stewart was arguably the biggest breakout star in the 2010s. Her appearance on the 'Twilight' series of films, adapted from the novel of the same name by author Stephenie Meyer, made her a household name alongside co-star Robert Pattinson. Despite being recognized as a superstar, Stewart's career journey has been a chequered one. Not only has she sought to do everything in her power to make sure that she's not frozen in time as an actor, but also ventured into uncharted territory when it comes to her acting choices.
Stewart was recently in attendance at the Palm Springs Film Festival. During the course of the event, the 35-year-old actress and director was asked by E! News whether she would ever like to return to the 'Twilight' franchise, to which she replied that she is interested in re-adapting the 2008 movie with the support of a big budget. Stewart remarked, "Imagine if we had like a huge budget and a bunch of love and support, I would love to readapt." She added, "Yeah, sure. I'll do the remake. I'm doing it. I'm committed."
Stewart then went on to express her gratitude for the directors who had previously worked with her on the five 'Twilight' films, commenting on the distinctness of their vision. She explained, "I love what all of the directors did with the movies. But they were so themselves and weird and kind of squirrelly and just so present in that time when they didn't really know what they were yet before they blew up."
Finding success as a breakout star didn't dull the artistic senses of Stewart, who has since then deliberately moved away from comfort zone-based roles and characters. Instead of capitalizing on her established image as a vulnerable teenage girl, Stewart went on to collaborate with significantly diverse directors such as Pablo Larrain, Oliver Assayas, and David Cronenberg. Stewart herself wore the director's hat for 'The Chronology of Water', which was adapted from the Lidia Yuknavitch memoir of the same name and was released in December 2025.
The Twilight franchise is still widely held as one of the most lucrative film franchises of all time. The five individual films still have immense re-watch potential, especially for fans, and the 2008 movie was re-released in theatres last year to mark the first novel's 20th anniversary. The worldwide box office haul of the entire five-film series has crossed over the $3.3 billion mark. In this connection, it was previously reported that Netflix has ordered a straight-to-series animated 'Twilight' series, based on the 2020 Stephenie Meyer companion novel 'Midnight Sun', which chronicles the events of the novels from the perspective of Edward Cullen.
