LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Hulu's most recent drama series, 'We Were the Lucky Ones', portrays the ultimately optimistic yet heartbreaking true story of a Jewish family.

Inspired by real incidents, this moving drama follows the Kurc family as their world falls around them during WWII.

The series, based on author Georgia Hunter's family's real-life battle to escape the Holocaust, premiered on March 28, 2024. It is filled with emotionally resonant characters who demonstrate steadfast courage in the face of danger.

After watching and analyzing the series, let's revisit the main characters and rate them based on their perseverance in the face of unbelievable adversity.

Halina Kurc (Joey King), the youngest of the Kurc children, was first portrayed as a carefree young lady. However, her life altered abruptly when she saw the realities of war.

Halina, a Jewish woman living in Poland during the Nazi occupation, faces unimaginable hardships and hazards every day. However, she refuses to give in to despair or terror and leaves for Lvov.

Halina stands out as a character and is placed at number one because of her courage. She is not afraid to take chances and does everything in her power to ensure that she along with her family survive the horrors of the war.

Halina's courage is shown not only by her deeds but also by her resilience, compassion, and everlasting faith in the face of terrible adversity.

Mila Kurc (Hadas Yaron) unquestionably takes second place, as she exemplifies determination and resiliency.

Despite the commotion and danger around her, she tries all she can to protect her daughter Felicia (Belle Swarc).

After learning that her husband Selim (Michael Aloni) is missing, she stands tall and resorts to keeping her daughter safe, even though doing so often exposes her to the risk of being killed.

She nearly lost her life once, but it is her sheer determination and motherly love that truly distinguish her from other characters in the series.

Genek Kurc (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), the oldest son of the Kurc family, earns the third slot due to his tremendous transformation.

Genek had a successful profession at the start of the series, but following the German takeover, his life changed dramatically when he and his wife were caught by the Soviets and transferred to a labor camp.

At the labor camp, the man endures extreme environments and protests for better living conditions but ends up being severely beaten.

Finally, he emerges as a genuine winner when he learns that his wife and family are his strength, giving him the courage to fight in the battle.

Bella

Bella (Eva Feiler), Jakob Kurc's (Amit Rahav) wife, is fourth on the list due to her unwavering perseverance and tenacity. Bella, displaying her fortitude, runs to Lvov with Halina, and despite the difficult voyage, she meets the love of her life.

The only thing that genuinely distinguishes Bella is her everlasting devotion and dedication to Jakob.

Although the pair tried to remain apart at times, they soon realized that they couldn't and had to rely on one another.

She epitomizes the strength and spirit of the human heart, reminding us of the power of love and tenacity in the face of terrible adversity.

Addy Kurc

Addy Kurc (Logan Lerman) takes fifth place on the list thanks to his determination to reunite with his family.

From the first episode, it was clear that Addy was worried about his family and wanted to find them quickly, but failed to do so because of the war.

Although he was safe, it did not bring satisfaction as he desperately wrote to his family, hoping for a response. Unfortunately, there was no sign of their survival.

Addy's strong determination shines through when he accepts his situation and decides to give a chance at life.

Sometimes accepting our reality becomes challenging; instead, we seek comfort in hope and illusion. Addy breaks free from this cycle and decides to wait for his family while moving forward with his life.

Jakob Kurc

Based on Georgia Hunter's novel of the same name, 'We Were the Lucky Ones' intricately intertwines the lives of three generations of the Kurc family (@hulu)

Jakob Kurc (Amit Rahav), was a law student with a passion for photography before the war. This passion for photography later proved to be helpful for Jakob's survival as he was hired by the Germans as a photographer.

Throughout the series, Jakob displays remarkable resourcefulness in challenging situations, earning sixth place in the list.

Despite the hardships, Jakob remains dedicated to his childhood sweetheart and now his wife, Bella. Their relationship provides comfort and stability amidst the chaos of war, giving them the strength to endure the challenges they face.

Nechuma Kurc

The Kurc matriarch, Nechuma Kurc (Robin Weigert), is an epitome of strength and resilience. Despite facing constant threats of losing her family, she remains a steadfast pillar of support for her husband and children.

Her exceptional skills as a seamstress add to her admirable character, making her a role model for women who strive to balance personal and professional lives.

Nechuma's emotional vulnerability is evident in the scene where she faces eviction from her house, yet she stays strong and supports her family.

Her strength and determination make her a deserving and essential character in the story.

Sol Kurc

The reason Sol Kurc (Lior Ashkenazi) is at the bottom of the list and is not ranked number one is solely because of the limited perspective shown of Sol's struggle in the show.

The character received very limited screen time which made it difficult to fully resonate with his struggles.

However, that does not make Sol a less likable character. Despite losing his beloved shop and facing difficult health situations, he perseveres with hope and selflessness.

His determination to support his family and ensure their survival during the Holocaust is truly inspiring.

It is no surprise that he was respected and loved by his family for being a dependable patriarch of the Kurcs household.
