'Snowpiercer' Season 3 Episode 9: How did Mr Wilford break out of prison?
Episode 9 of 'Snowpiercer' Season 3 saw the train celebrate Melanie Cavill's return after being rescued by Layton, Ben, and Josie. While a major chunk of the episode was about her, it also saw a rejuvenated Mr Wilford break out of prison, marking his first move after remaining relatively docile over the last few episodes of 'Snowpiercer' Season 3.
For those who missed it, here's a quick rundown of things before we get to Wilford and his prison break. Titled 'A Beacon For Us All,' Episode 9 of 'Snowpiercer' Season 3 began with Melanie being rescued and followed her as she reunited with Alex and Ben. She also has an interaction with Mr Wilford, during which she finds out about Layton's plans of leading the train to New Eden. This makes her look her into the data about the region and she concludes that it's not worth the risk as the possibilities of survival aren't high enough.

She tries to talk Layton out of it but he refuses to change his mind as he feels that New Eden is the only ray of hope on the train and dreams of a world for his daughter that isn't restricted to the Snowpiercer. Melanie outs Layton after this conversation, hoping to bring an end to a mission that she finds to be suicidal. While the above-mentioned events transpired, we saw Mr Wilford capitalize on Melanie's return as he broke out of prison. So, how did Mr Wilford break out? Keep on reading to find out!
Mr Wilford was held in a luxurious cell after being overthrown by Layton. Though he seemed rather crippled after being attacked by Roche, the ruthlessness and plotting nature of his remained. He also had a lot of privileges, including visits from Miss Audrey, after finding a way to grease the palms of the guards outside his cell. Using these perks, LJ hatches a plan to help Wilford usurp Layton and remerge as the leader of the train.
He procures a poisonous drug from Mrs Headwood and sneaks it in Wilford's cabin, who laces the guards' cigars with it. This results in their death, following which Wilford breaks out of prison. Though Wilford's whereabouts aren't revealed, we could expect him to bank on the distrust that the passengers are harboring against Layton. He could wait for them to dethrone Layton and reappear posing to be their savior.
