The Emmys snubbed 'Masters of the Air', and here's why the superb show deserved so much more
LONDON, ENGLAND: 'Masters of the Air,' created by John Shiban and John Orloff for Apple TV+, is based on Donald L Miller's 2007 book of the same name.
The series follows the 100th Bomb Group, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber unit in the Eighth Air Force, as they carry out their missions in eastern England during the Second World War.
'Masters of the Air' garnered widespread acclaim for its compelling storytelling, stunning visuals, and strong performances. The series not only depicted the historical significance of the group's missions but also delved into the personal struggles and triumphs of the bombers involved.
The Emmy nominations for the 76th awards were unveiled on Wednesday, and unfortunately, 'Masters of the Air' did not receive the attention it deserved. This omission was surprising given the high caliber of acting by some of the greatest actors.
'Masters of the Air' received only three nominations: Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie, or Special, and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
However, 'Masters of the Air' deserves more than just three shallow nominations at the Emmys.
Austin Butler delivers a stellar performance as Major Gale 'Buck' Cleven in 'Masters of the Air'
Austin Butler's portrayal of Major Gale 'Buck' Cleven in 'Masters of the Air' is exceptional, contributing significantly to the series' memorable impact.
Butler skillfully captures the essence of the Second World War era while infusing his performance with a modern sensibility. Throughout the show, Cleven confronts various challenges and risks as a member of the 100th Bomb Group.
Butler's portrayal of Cleven feels real and genuine. He makes the character's challenges and emotions believable, showing Cleven's courage and complexity during wartime.
He definitely deserves an Emmy nomination for his role in 'Masters of the Air'. The lack of recognition is disappointing and surprising, considering his outstanding performance.
Callum Turner also impresses in 'Masters of the Air'
In 'Masters of the Air', Callum Turner impresses with his role as Major John 'Bucky' Egan, delivering an outstanding performance alongside Butler.
Turner captures Egan's bravery and leadership during the Second World War, showing both his strengths and vulnerabilities. The aerial combat sequences in ‘Masters of the Air’ are brought to life in stunning detail, especially through Turner's amazing performance.
From his battles against enemies in Germany to his skilled piloting of aircraft and combat engagements, Turner did a commendable job.
At the very least, Turner deserves recognition at the Emmys for his exceptional performance in 'Masters of the Air'. Him not receiving a nomination is a significant snub.
'Masters of the Air' delivers a heartfelt tribute to brave airmen of the Second World War
'Masters of the Air' delivers a heartfelt tribute to the brave airmen of the Second World War.
Through its stunning cinematography and historical accuracy, the series honors the legacy of the heroes, bringing their stories to life with emotional depth and authenticity.
While watching the show, viewers feel like they are right in the middle of the action, experiencing the thrilling and dangerous world of aerial combat alongside the airmen. This is made possible by the show's attention to historical accuracy, Adam Arkapaw's cinematography, and advanced visual effects.
The show should have been recognized with nominations for Outstanding Drama Series, acknowledging its compelling storytelling and production quality.
Butler deserved recognition for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, highlighting his outstanding performance that brought depth to his character. Additionally, the cinematography deserved praise in the category of Outstanding Cinematography.
