Spoilers for ‘The Circle’ Season 5

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM: Netflix finally premiered Season 5 of the exciting and unique show ‘The Circle’. In this show, contestants are isolated and can only communicate with each other using the series’ built-in social media platform known as the “Circle.” The main point of the reality tv game show is to win fellow contestants’ votes and emerge as the most popular players, called “influencers.”

Influencers are also given the power to “block” or remove another player from the game. So to gain popularity to stand out, contestants either choose to play as themselves or create fake "likable" profiles to catfish the other players for votes. Only one player can win the grand prize worth $150K, and during that journey, several players are booted out. In Season 5 of ‘The Circle’, player Brian Clark, who was catfishing as his own daughter Brittany, was blocked after Raven Sutton and Chaz Lawery were crowned influencers in the first four episodes.

Brian entered the competition disguised in the virtual world as his daughter because he aimed to strategically win votes by playing out a well-thought-out plan of flirting with the male contestants and winning their votes. But ‘Brittany’ tragically seemed to be one of the least-liked contestants after several of the contestants found her virtual personality to be slightly off. Contestants Xanthi Perdikomatis and Brett Robinson were the first to doubt if Brittany was a catfish and shared their suspicions with Tom Houghton, who also seemed to agree.

After Raven and Chaz were revealed as the top-rated players, they were handed the responsibility of blocking a player. The two entered into an intense discussion considering their options. While Raven felt she should give Brittany another chance, Chaz wanted to save Billie-Jean Blackett or “Bruno.” Finally, after much deliberation, they picked Brittany while stating that it was a hard decision and that they hoped the others understood their choice. Chaz later also explained that it was best to make the decision based on facts over feelings.

Brian/Brittany was then given the option to meet one player, and he chose to visit Raven because of their initial connection after Raven had opened up to him about her mother’s death. When the two finally met, Raven ultimately learned that Brittany was, in fact, a catfish and that Brian had entered into the show to win the money for his daughter and granddaughter. The two shared an emotional conversation as Raven revealed that she had been convinced “Brittany was real.”  The two also discussed who they felt the other catfishes could be and shared personal details with each other as Brian exited the show. While he did not get a chance to win the prize, he did make a new friend. Brian/Brittany’s exit marks the first contestant to be blocked and removed from ‘The Circle’, and fans can surely expect more people to be blocked in the second batch of episodes set to drop in the upcoming week.
