KYOTO, JAPAN: Rashida Jones starrer 'Sunny' is an unusual mystery comedy series that touches upon the subjects of grief, artificial intelligence, and organized crime. The show premiered on July 10, on Apple TV+. After seven episodes, fans are still clueless about where the mystery might be headed.
Enigma around Masa Sakamoto's disappearance, his work as a roboticist, and the secrets of Dark Manual have already left fans scratching their heads. Moreover, Hime's evil agendas, paired with Mixxy and Noriko's suspicious behavior have only been add-ons to the dragged-on mystery. Thankfully, 'Sunny' Episode 7 dropped a subtle hint of what could be the prime focus of the show as it nears a finale.
Hime's terrible acts reek of desperation in Apple TV+'s 'Sunny'
It is clearly established that Masa Sakamoto (Hidetoshi Nishijima) and his accomplishments as a roboticist shared a connection with Hime (YOU), a high-ranking member of the Yakuza. Yet, the nature of their relationship remains a mystery. Masa was quite cordial when he met Hime in one of the earlier episodes but that doesn't mean he corroborated her evil schemes.
Hime is a strong antagonist but she isn't the most dangerous of them all. As her father was battling health issues, she aimed to take over the gang. For this, she had to prove her worth. She killed the counselor, who aimed to curb Yakuza activities, and pinned the crime on the robot. Later, she abducted Sunny and forced Suzie Sakamoto (Rashida Jones) to give password the to Masa's laptop, to probably access the Dark Manual, which was another attempt to win her father's heart, so that he would pass on his legacy to her.
'Sunny' could narrow down to dirty power game by the finale
When Hime's father suddenly dies, Hime expects to take over the Yakuza. However, in 'Sunny' Episode 7, she is rattled upon witnessing the interference of her cousin, Jin, who was also the last person to meet Hime's father. Hime suspects that Jin killed her father to gain control of the Yakuza, while he asserts that her father didn't believe in her and wanted him to take the lead.
While our heads wrapped around Masa Sakamoto's disappearance, Jin and Hime's subplot could turn out to be the most pivotal angle to the subplot. The two cousins have been fighting for power within the gang and both of them are ready to go to any lengths.
The counselor who aimed to stop the spread of organized crime was killed by Hime, which also subtly suggests that they want to have someone in power who wouldn't be a threat to them. 'Sunny' is likely to end with a chase for power, amid the dangers of the crime world and artificial intelligence.
Seven episodes of 'Sunny' are now streaming on Apple TV+.
