Suzie (Rashida Jones) is an American living in Kyoto, Japan. Her life turns upside down when her husband and son vanish during a mysterious plane crash. As a 'consolation', her husband’s electronics firm gives her a domestic robot, Sunny.

Initially, Suzie resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life. However, gradually, the pair becomes friends and they start to investigate the dark truth behind what happened to Suzie’s family.

Soon, they are drawn into a dangerous world Suzie never knew existed.

The official synopsis similarly reads, "Sunny stars Jones as Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As “consolation” she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company."

The synopsis further reads, "Though at first, Suzie resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, gradually they develop an unexpected friendship.
