LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: John Sugar (Colin Farrell) has been circling around the high-profile disappearance case of Olivia Siegel (Sydney Chandler) in Apple TV+'s 'Sugar'.

After investigating her belongings and questioning her family and friends, John Sugar finally learns a baffling truth about Olivia in Episode 3.

In 'Sugar' Episode 2, John gathered a hint that Olivia's stepmother Melanie Matthews (Amy Ryan) knows something about her disappearance and has been hiding it from him. And therefore, he spies on her, which leads him to Teresa Vasquez's (Cher Alvarez) house.

In 'Sugar' Episode 3, Melanie reveals that she volunteered at a shelter where she helped women get out of abusive relationships, which led to her acquaintance with Teresa.

She shares that after assisting Teresa in escaping her abusive husband, her sister Carmen Vasquez sought her help, trapped in a similar situation with a man named Clifford Carter. Melanie further explains that Olivia, who assisted her in this volunteer work, grew close to Carmen during this time.

When Carmen stopped answering Olivia's calls one day, Olivia grew worried and decided to visit Carmen's home. There, she encountered Clifford, who had murdered Carmen.

According to Melanie, Clifford noticed Olivia and was about to target her, but Olivia defended herself by grabbing a gun and shooting him.

In a state of panic, Olivia contacted Melanie, who arrived at the scene, took the gun from Olivia, and disposed of Clifford's body in the trunk of Olivia's car. Melanie mentions that this was the last time she saw Olivia.

What is Melanie Matthews hiding in Apple TV+'s 'Sugar'?

John Sugar initially trusts Melanie's account due to the evidence supporting her story, especially regarding Clifford's body in Olivia's car. However, upon reflection, he becomes suspicious as certain details don't align. He finds it odd that Olivia and Melanie didn't inform the police, considering Olivia would likely have been hailed for her bravery, given Clifford's criminal history.

Sugar questions why Melanie didn't persuade Olivia to report the incident, but Melanie defends her decision, citing her love and concern for Olivia. Nevertheless, Sugar wonders why would Olivia leave Clifford's body in her car and then disappear if she wanted to avoid the scandal so desperately.

In the final moments of the episode, we see Melanie visiting her ex-husband Bernie Siegel (Dennis Boutsikaris). The brief scene suggests that the two still share some intimate relationship while stating the contrary to Sugar.

With Bernie paying no heed to Olivia's disappearance and Melanie meeting secretly with him, we wonder what else the Siegel family is hiding. In the upcoming episode, we expect John Sugar to discover secrets of the Siegel family while on a pursuit to save Olivia before it's too late.

'Sugar' is available to stream on Apple TV+.
