'Semantic Error' popularity brings success for Dongkiz, fans happy for 'famous era'

The release of the hit BL (boy love) K-drama ‘Semantic Error’ has led to several reasons for celebration. While South Korea is known to be pretty conservative, the general public is finally accepting the LGBT+ community which has led to more positive representation in the media. From gay characters being used as comic relief in K-dramas, we have gone to popular idol actors starring in LGBT+ friendly projects like BLs. This was seen with the immense success of ‘Semantic Error’ starring Dongkiz’s Jaechan and ex-KNK star Seoham.

Along with the acceptance of LGBT+ dramas, ‘Semantic Error’ has also finally helped Dongkiz get the recognition they deserve. With 100s of acts debuting in K-pop every year, only a few stand out and make a mark. While Dongkiz debuted in 2018, they are quite underrated compared to other idol groups that debuted in the same year.  Out of the 91 groups that debuted that year, the general public only remembers a few like (G)I-DLE, Ateez, Loona, and Stray Kids. But that is about to change with Dongkiz seeing a sudden chart reversal.

Dongkiz’s old songs see success

It seems that Dongkiz is about to pull a Brave Girls. Brave Girls is the iconic girl group that saw fame 10 years after their debut due to a viral compilation of ‘Rollin’. ‘Semantic Error’ was the most-watched Korean content on OTT platforms in March's second week when the finale aired. Immediately, Dongkiz’s 2020 song ‘Lupin’ and previous release ‘Crazy Night’ entered several Korean charts like Bugs at #21 and #98 respectively. ‘Lupin’ even garnered 1 million Spotify streams showcasing Dongkiz’s sudden rise to fame.

Additionally, Dongkiz’s albums are finally getting sold out and are in need of being restocked. They even entered the extremely difficult Genie Chart. Jaechan and Seoham’s cover for Cine21 magazine was sold out in 2 hours of its release and continued to do so for 3 days straight for the first time in 27 years of the magazine’s history. Jaechan and Dongkiz were also in the Top 2 of VLive’s daily chart on March 16.

Fans were also happy that many new fans joined in helping them complete their very first fan project on Mubeat for Dongkiz’s third debut anniversary. Meanwhile, Chinese fans have helped a compilation video of ‘Lupin’ reach 900k views on the Chinese platform ‘Bilibili’. Well, now everyone is excited as the K-pop boy group has announced that they will be having a comeback in March. They also ranked #5 on Beat Road’s chart, following the likes of Monsta X, Seventeen, NCT, and TXT.

'A fever dream'

Happy fans trended Dongkiz as they made tweets like, “OH MY GODNESS 1. dongkiz album selling out and restoking 2. dongkiz charting on genie 3. lupin reached 1M streams on spotify Y'ALL I'M IN TEARS NOW I MEAN I'M CRYING NOW.” Another added, “I feel like Semantic Error is so much more than 'just' a drama like it holds so much meaning. it helped seoham overcome his slump and made him think it's okay to continue pursuing his dream, helped jaechan promote dongkiz, gave them their first '1st place', spread more mainstream.” Another joked, “Once semantic error ends i will focus on stanning dongkiz. i will make them famous. i will knock on my neighbors doors and ask them to stream lupin and universe.”

One fan flexed, “DONGKIZ FAMOUS ERA IS HAPPENING.” Another made a reaction meme, “Dongkiz walking out of nugudom be like:.” An old fan asked, “So y’all telling me y’all never heard this song before the bl ?!?! Dongkiz been eatinggggg.” Another wished, “Dongkiz better be getting good promotions and studio choom performance for their comeback.” One fan was happy, “Dongkiz are currently charting on genie, what's happening now is so crazy but they really deserved it, I'm glad they've become appreciated and it's still growing.” Another added, “Dongkiz and knk albums being restocked and sold out is…absolutely a fever dream…thank you to all the new fans.”
