'Pink Venom': Blackpink the first girl group to top Billboard Global 200, fans shed 'happy tears'
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: Blackpink truly might be transcending K-pop and becoming one of the biggest girl groups in general as they continue to break records and make history with only their pre-released single ‘Pink Venom’. On Monday, August 29, Billboard updated its charts for the week and announced that Blackpink had become the first girl group in history to top Billboard Global 200.
While Blackpink was inactive as a group for almost two years, no hiatus could stop them as they announced that they would be making a comeback with their second studio album ‘Born Pink’ in September and following up with a world tour. To thank fans for waiting, they dropped the pre-release ‘Pink Venom’ which immediately went viral on social media from Neymar Jr giving it a shoutout to Taylor Swift and Dylan O’Brien doing its TikTok trend. Blackpink also shocked fans as ‘Born Pink’ crossed two million pre-orders in the first two weeks making them the first female act to achieve this feat.

Blackpink makes Billboard record with ‘Pink Venom’
With two more weeks left before the release of ‘Born Pink’, Blackpink is still breaking records in the meantime. The girls became the first K-pop girl group to perform at the 2022 MTV VMAs while member Lisa became the first K-pop soloist to get awarded. We then had ‘Pink Venom’ becoming the music video of the fastest female act to cross 100 million views on YouTube and the biggest Korean song debut on Spotify with 10.7 million unfiltered streams. And now, they have accumulated several Billboard records.
By topping Billboard Global 200, member Rosé becomes the first artist to top the chart as a soloist and with a group. Blackpink also ties with Fifth Harmony as a girl group from the 2010s with the most Billboard Hot 100 entries with eight songs. ‘Pink Venom’ debuted at #22 on the chart. Billboard also announced that ‘Pink Venom’ had the second-biggest worldwide weekly streams of 2022 with 212 million streams which led to them even topping the Global Excl US Chart. Blackpink also topped the Billboard World Digital Song Sales Chart with the pre-release.
