'Pennyworth' has been a highly watched series since the time of its release. The series premiered on July 28, 2019, and is based on DC Comics' 'Batman' character of the same name. The third season, marketed with the subtitle 'The Origin of Batman's Butler', was released on October 6, 2022. Although previously premiere on Epix, and then in October 2021, the series moved to HBO Max for the third season.

'Pennyworth' explores the early life of the titular Wayne family butler, Alfred Pennyworth, a former British soldier of the Special Air Service (SAS), years before the events of Gotham. After serving in the Malayan Emergency, he aims to form his own security company in an alternate history of London, that combines aspects of the early 1960s with invented events and practices inspired by 'V for Vendetta', such as a modern civil war and televised public executions. However, Alfred becomes a target of the fascist Raven Society, a group conspiring to take over the British government, and begins working against them alongside American agents of the No Name League, Thomas Wayne, and Martha Kane, the future parents of Bruce Wayne. Who is Ryan Fletcher's 'Daveboy'?

Wallace McDougal, commonly known as 'Daveboy', is a highland Scotsman and a close friend and ally of Alfred Pennyworth and Bazza. Daveboy was actually another longtime friend of Alfred who has a drinking problem and served with him in the army. He left the SAS service with the two, moving back to London. In season 3's third episode, 'Comply or Die', the creators showed Daveboy feeling responsible for Jessica's death, so he attends her parents' funeral, causing a scene when trying to make a speech while drunk, but impressing an attending Sally Prufrock. However, following his employment as a SAS soldier, Daveboy struggled with flashbacks and mental health issues. In Martha Kane, Daveboy showed no fear of impending death, despite at the time having a gun pointed at his head. When he was confronted by Bazza, who questioned if he was suicidal, Daveboy also admitted that he was not suicidal, and just wanted to pass the time.

The actor, Ryan Fletcher along with Jack Bannon, Ben Aldridge, Hainsley Lloyd Bennett, Paloma Faith, and Jason Flemyng had been cast in series regular roles in October 2018, with Bannon starring as the lead title character. When the series was released it had good feedback from the critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, season 1 has an approval rating of 73% based on 30 reviews, with an average rating of 7.30/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "While intriguing characters and impressive set-pieces make for an engaging spy-thriller, Pennyworth doesn't add much to the greater Batman mythos whereas for the second season, on Rotten Tomatoes, had an approval rating of 60% based on 5 reviews.

Titled 'Silver Birch', the next episode is slated to release on HBO Max on October 13, 2022, at 12 am PT/3 am ET.
