'Caitriona Balfe SNUBBED over Judi Dench': Fans upset about supporting actress Oscar noms

The nominations for the 94th Academy Awards have been announced and just like every year, we are already seeing some surprises. Actors Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan were the host at this year’s nominations event and fans absolutely loved their camaraderie. As far as the nominations are concerned, we got a really BIG surprise in the 'Best Supporting Actress' category, and going by the social media reactions, it was not a pleasant surprise.

Some of the frontrunners for the awards were Kirsten Dunst (‘The Power of the Dog’), Caitriona Balfe (‘Belfast’), and Ariana DeBose (‘West Side Story’). Shockingly, Balfe’s name was nowhere to be seen after the announcers revealed the names of the actresses that were nominated for the award.

The actresses who will be going up against each other for the awards included the frontrunners Ariana DeBose (‘West Side Story’), Aunjanue Ellis (‘King Richard’), and Kirsten Dunst (‘The Power of the Dog’). But we saw a couple of names that shocked (not surprised) everyone and prompted the social media users to express their disappointment.

Judi Dench was nominated for her role in the movie ‘Belfast’ while Jesse Buckley also garnered a nomination for her performance in the movie ‘The Lost Daughter’. Judi Dench being nominated shocked everyone and made everyone believe that the Irish actress Caitriona Balfe and Dench's co-star was snubbed by the Academy members. By looking at the reactions, it seems fans were really disappointed after her phenomenal performance was overlooked.

One movie-lover tweeted, “Judi Dench was wonderful in ‘Belfast’ but Caitriona Balfe deserved that nom.” Another fan said, “CAITRÍONA BALFE GOT SNUBBED BY @TheAcademy. THIS IS SO WRONG IN SO MANY WAYS!!!”

Meanwhile, another social media user wrote, “Caítriona Balfe SNUBBED by the academy smh.” Another user wrote, “Caitriona Balfe being snubbed over Judi Dench is a damn shame.”

“So @TheAcademy practically did to Caitríona Balfe what they had done to Amy Adams with Arrival, which remains one of the greatest snubs ever. Both had all the main oscar precursors, Balfe even had the SAG ensemble nomination, and yet they chose Dench?” said another user.

Balfe had an amazing year with the release of Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Belfast’. The actress was nominated in the Supporting Actress category by various critics associations and also garnered nods at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards. So, we can understand why fans and netizens are so upset with Dench’s nomination. The ceremony for the 94th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 27, 2022, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
