LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: When a spin-off series for ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ was announced, everyone had mixed feelings about it. To anyone who was a fan of the movie franchise, the bar was set incredibly high for ‘XO, Kitty’, the spin-off series, which is now streaming on Netflix. ‘XO, Kitty’ is an overload of every high school cliche and trope that one can imagine and focuses on the titular character Kitty Song Covey.

Netflix had advertised ‘XO, Kitty’ as a K-drama, and while it was primarily set in Korea, had Korean actors and actresses, with of course, plenty of K-pop songs, it felt…American. Viewers have taken social media by storm as they get through the episodes of ‘XO, Kitty’ to talk about how they felt about the series.

‘The acting and writing kinda sucks’

The bar was set high and viewers were left extremely disappointed and they have left no stone unturned to express their opinion about the show. One viewer tweeted, “I could not get past episode 4 of xo kitty I’m so sorry, the acting and writing kinda sucks, it gets annoying how they insert K-pop songs literally every 5 seconds and the directing is kinda weird. i really wanted to love ittt.”

Despite wanting to be invested in ‘XO, Kitty’, some viewers couldn’t even make it to the end of the series and it was only ten episodes. Another viewer wrote, “Xo, Kitty sucks but at least all the kpop playlist on the series ATE.” And while we’re on the subject of K-pop, another viewer wrote, “The soundtrack for XO Kitty is superb that's definitely the only reason I’m watching it aha ...”

Was ‘XO, Kitty’ a K-drama, according to fans?

Viewers had a lot of opinions on whether or not ‘XO, Kitty’ could pass as a K-drama, one of the most popular genres out there right now. One viewer wrote, “It’s kinda “fake” K-drama yk 😶.” Another viewer said, “Xo Kitty is not K-drama vibe, just another Hollywood teen mess drama. Everybody loves everybody. Lastly, to sum up the emotions of existing K-drama viewers, a fan wrote, “Xo, kitty is trying soooo hard to be a k-drama, like gurllll stawp it’s not a good look on you.”
