Chris Hemsworth’s latest movie ‘Spiderhead’ has finally been released on Netflix and is based on the riveting 2010 collection of short stories written by author George Saunders. The movie, which is based on the short story ‘Escape from Spiderhead’, revolves around a visionary scientist named Steve Abnesti (Hemsworth) who has engineered a certain kind of drug that would make the people what they want.

If someone wants to laugh, there’s a drug for that. If someone wants to feel lusty, then there’s a drug for that too. However, things go crazy when one of the test subjects starts to show some weird results and she ends up killing herself. That’s when Jeff (Miles Teller), our protagonist, realizes that there’s something bad happening here. The more he starts knowing about Steve (Hemsworth) and the prison, Jeff starts getting to know what’s actually happening there. When he finds out the truth, he is determined to get out of there. In this movie, everything is about freedom because all the subjects chosen for the aforementioned drug program are prison inmates and they are given a large degree of freedom and comfort.

Netflix 'Spiderhead' Review: Joseph Kosinski, Chris Hemsworth blend genres in compelling, stylish sci-fi flick

'Spiderhead' Ending Explained: Did Steve mislead Jeff and others by giving them dangerous drugs?

The movie successfully manages to show the negative side of the pharmaceutical world and mixes different genres for a movie that’s captivating. However, it seems that fans are really divided about how they feel about Joseph Kosinski’s latest film. A lot of people trashed the movie for being “underwhelming”, but there were who loved the movie for its crazy storyline and Hemsworth’s impeccable acting.

One of the fans wrote, “#Spiderhead was not a good movie. Boring and slow. Underwhelming and weak plot. The only redeeming aspect of the movie was Chris Hemsworth.” Another social media user said, “Joseph Kosinski's #Spiderhead is disappointing after the standards set by his Top Gun sequel. It's less heady sci-fi and more B-movie thriller, which feels like a missed opportunity given its intriguing premise. Now I understand why Netflix didn't heavily market this film.”

“Spiderhead is slow-moving and easy to predict. Very underwhelming,” tweeted another user. “Omg #Spiderhead on Netflix was trash. What a shitty movie,” wrote another one.
“#Spiderhead feels like it should be a lot better than it is. It has a great cast and some interesting ideas but in the end, it’s kinda just a bit boring, especially toward the end. Not a must-see by any means, but won’t be the worst movie you watch this year either,” said another one.

Meanwhile, there were many who believed that Kosinski has hit a home run once again.
“#Spiderhead is Joseph Kosinski's second home run of the year, an atmospheric and unsettlingly claustrophobic thriller that is much funnier/weirder than the marketing suggests, led by a trio of outstanding performances (Chris Hemsworth is unbelievable) and a yacht rock soundtrack,” tweeted one fan.

Another Twitter user wrote, “Overall a pretty decent film about the ability of control and how far one will go to get that control, amazing performances by miles teller and Jurnee Smollett who carried the film for me although a very slow start the ending is pretty good.” Another fan tweeted, “#Spiderhead is awesome. Compelling original story. Great cast with incredible performances. Kosinski packs in all the emotions (often literally) along with some truly breathtaking shots. Definitely recommend on #Netflix.”

This is Kosinski’s second feature film of 2022 and there was a lot of anticipation for it because of how ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ turned out to be a gigantic hit. The movie just crossed $800 million at the global box office and is one of the best-reviewed movies of this year. So, it doesn’t come as a shock that ‘Spiderhead’ is getting such mixed reviews because everyone had such high expectations from Kosinski.
