MTV VMAs 2021: Harry Styles wins Best Choreography over BTS, ARMY calls show 'joke'
Harry Styles has won ‘Best Choreography’ for his song ‘Treat People With Kindness’ at the MTV VMAs 2021. And while his fans are congratulating him, there is one nominee’s fandom that is angry. The K-pop global group BTS was nominated for ‘Best Choreography’ for their latest English single ‘Butter’. Choreographer Son Sung-deuk was even present at the VMAs which made fans think that BTS already had it.
An hour before MTV VMAs announced the award, ARMY trended ‘Best Choreography’ as they congratulated BTS and Sung-deuk as they thought they would win ‘Best Choreography’. It is no secret that the K-pop industry values dance as much as vocal skills and hence all idols are trained in dancing. Even pop-ballad songs have choreography as K-pop artists incorporate a dance that complements their song. Meanwhile, ARMY wondered if they had even seen Harry Styles ever dance.

BTS loses 'Best Choreography' to Harry Styles
While there probably wouldn’t have been much uproar had Harry won against BTS in a vocal category like ‘Best Pop’, Army are angry that the MTV VMAs have awarded a dance award to an artist who is not really known for dancing. BTS’ fans went through the ‘Treat People With Kindness’ music video and were angry that the jazzy choreography won over BTS’ energetic and intricate choreography for ‘Butter’.
While dance is pretty subjective, Army who also like Harry Styles feel that the clear winner in the ‘Best Choreography’ category should have been BTS. Watch the performance video for BTS’ ‘Butter’ and Harry Styles’ ‘Treat People With Kindness’ below.
'Biggest joke'
Angry Army made tweets like, “Not giving Best Choreography to BTS is literally the biggest joke ever,” “I feel bad for son sungdeuk heading to the ceremony thinking it was a real award show that actually would award based on the best choreography,” and “BUTTER NOT WINNING BEST CHOREO WHEN ITS THE ONLY SONG THATS NOMINATED WHO HAS A F**KING REAL WHOLE SONG CHOREOGRAPHY VMAS YOURE GOING TO HELL.”
“Vmas just giving awards to every yt person, that man cannot dance how tf did he win best choreography ??? over butter ??? OVER THIS ??” said another Army. One added, "BUTTER LOST BEST CHOREOGRAPHY THIS HAS TO BE A JOKE." Another angrily commented, "Won best choreography for what exactly, like can someone show a video of his choreography srs."

MTV Video Music Awards 2021 was held on September 12, 2021, at Barclays Center, New York City in front of a live audience. The 40th edition of the awards ceremony began at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT and was aired live on CTV.
