MTV VMAs 2021: BTS beats Blackpink AGAIN to win Group of the Year
After having an online show following the health protocols due to the global pandemic, MTV Video Music Awards popularly known as the VMAs is finally returning to have an in-person show where artists will attend the show. The 2021 MTV VMAs has been a fan favorite show. Over the years, with fans being at the center of many categories, many fans have started being able to vote for their favorite artists from any part of the world, as many times as they like.
The award show introduced the category ‘Group of the Year’ for the first time in the year 1984 during its inaugural ceremony. The first winner of this award is the American rock band ZZ Top. The category was dropped after the year 2007 only to be re-introduced in the year 2019 under which BTS was nominated for the first time and came out victorious. Since then, the title has been held by BTS as they have now won it for the third time in a row.

BTS win Group of the Year
The ‘Group of the Year’ category is one that has been heavily dominated by K-pop over the last three years. The nominations for this category at the 2021 VMAs saw artists like BTS, their biggest K-pop competition Blackpink, CNCO, Foo Fighters, Jonas Brothers, Maroon 5, Silk Sonic, and Twenty One Pilots. With the voting being fan-led and the competition fierce, BTS and Blackpink were the final two contestants who were battling neck-to-neck at the show. ARMY and Blinks sure put up a tough fight for this one.
The category is one of the few social media voted categories, fans get to pick their favorite artists and saw fierce competition with two of the most iconic K-pop groups competing against one another. BTS and Blackpink were the top two contestants that came out of the nominees for this category as BTS was announced as the Group of the Year at the 2021 VMAs.

Three-time winner BTS
Blackpink was nominated under the category thrice as well but was not able to make a win over the years. The 2020 nominees also saw competition from another powerful K-pop group, Monsta X who also were not able to take the win.
BTS won the Best Group award in the year 2019, 2020 and now with 2021 making it their third win as they tie with the American Rock band No Doubt who have also won the title three times. No Doubt is an American rock band from Anaheim, California, formed in 1986. The band consisted of vocalist Gwen Stefani, guitarist Tom Dumont, bassist Tony Kanal and drummer Adrian Young.
MTV Video Music Awards 2021 was held on September 12, 2021, at Barclays Center, New York City in front of a live audience. The 40th edition of the awards ceremony began at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT and was aired live on CTV.
