'Mayor of Kingstown' Season 3: Iris finally proves she's not what everyone's been moaning about
Contains spoilers for 'Mayor of Kingstown' Season 3
LANSING, MICHIGAN: In 'Mayor of Kingstown' Season 3, Iris (Emma Laird) finds a meaningful purpose as she undertakes the mission of spying on Konstantin (Yorick van Wageningen) to assist Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) with crucial insider information.
Iris was previously shown as someone who always needed rescuing by Mike in Seasons 1 and 2. Now, Iris becomes a strong and valuable team member, helping with the mission and showing her growth and strength.
Iris’s mission played a crucial role in providing Mike with important information about Merle Callahan (Richard Brake), the leader of the Aryan Brotherhood, and Konstantin’s illicit drug deal.
She also uncovered details about the planned arrival of Konstantin’s girls, which was a significant part of the operation. However, the situation took a tragic turn when the bus transporting Konstantin’s girls was involved in an accident, resulting in their deaths.
In Season 3, Iris demonstrates her strength and independence, proving that she is a capable and powerful woman who no longer relies on Mike for support. Her actions throughout the season highlight her ability to handle complex situations on her own.
'Mayor of Kingstown' Season 3 Episode 8 proves Iris is no longer a damsel in distress
Konstantin’s proposal to Iris to leave Kingstown in 'Mayor of Kingstown Season 3' Episode 8, highlights the similarities between him and Mike. Both men, in their own ways, view Iris as someone who needs to be protected from the harsh realities of their world.
However, Iris firmly stated that she does not want to leave Kingstown. Even when Mike urged her to accept Konstantin's proposal and leave, Iris stood her ground and chose to stay.
The bus tragedy in 'Mayor of Kingstown' Season 3 profoundly impacted Iris, prompting her to disobey Konstantin's direct orders. In Season 3, Episode 8, Konstantin apologized for violently shaking Iris in an attempt to distract her.
When Konstantin killed one of Merle's men in 'Mayor of Kingstown' Season 3 Episode 8, Iris proved herself capable of witnessing Konstantin's violent acts without being affected.
However, Konstantin still believed he should make decisions for her. Despite this, it seems she will not listen to either Mike or Konstantin and will stay in Kingstown.
Fans happy as Iris proves she no longer needs Mike's protection
In 'Mayor of Kingstown' Season 3 Episode 6, Mike inadvertently put Iris in danger with his decisions and protective instincts. Mike's decision to call Iris and inform her that the SWAT team would soon raid Konstantin's Cavo, advising her to take her lunch break, violated his own protocol of only using the burner phone for communication.
Mike failed to understand that if Iris took a break during the raid, Konstantin might become suspicious of her actions. Iris proved she could take care of herself and make sound choices when she chose to stay during the raid instead of taking her lunch break.
Had Iris listened to Mike's advice, she would have likely been killed. Konstantin is ruthless and does not tolerate betrayal; he kills anyone he suspects of disloyalty.
Mike often undermined Iris’s autonomy under the pretense of protecting her, making decisions on her behalf rather than including her in discussions about her future.
In 'Mayor of Kingstown' Season 3 Episode 5, Iris agreed to spy on Konstantin to assist Mike, proving she is a strong woman.
Fans have also noticed Iris's evolution in character. Throughout the series, Iris has transformed from someone who seemed to need constant rescue to a strong and independent individual capable of making her own decisions.
A fan wrote on Reddit, "Mike and Iris's relationship is becoming more than just Mike's concern for her safety, and wanting to help & protect her as a friend. He is being drawn to her emotionally. He is attracted to her as a strong, intelligent, driven woman that is fearless, in spite of her youth, ...beautiful (even without makeup), resourceful, and ...he recognizes that she really cares for him."
Another fan wrote on Reddit, "Iris's loyalty has shifted from...formally Milo, ...then to Konstantin,...but now to Mike. She is putting her life on the line, as Konstantin's "arm candy", to help Mike in his effort to neutralize Konstantin's control in the local crime hierarchy."
One fan commented on Reddit, "I chose the think that Mike cannot help but be attracted to her. In spite of her age, she is a strong, fearless woman, who, like him, is trying to survive her past and forge a new future free of the shackles of a sorted history. Eventually, I think she will become a part of his future. I know it's crazy, but their relationship could create a certain symmetry in his story."
A fan wrote on X, "Bunny and Iris are carrying this season off Mayor of Kingstown. Season been phenomenal so far."
