BEVERLEY HILLS, CALIFORNIA: Jerrod Carmichael's joke about Tom Cruise and Scientology at the Golden Globes was not met with a lot of laughter. The host was seen walking out after a commercial break with three trophies as he joked that these awards were returned by Cruise after the HFPA's diversity controversy.

"I'm just the host or whatever, but I have a pitch," Carmichael said. "I think maybe we take these three things and exchange them for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige." Shelly, the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige, was last seen in public in August 2007, which sparked rumors regarding her whereabouts and wellbeing. Authorities were allegedly not able to locate David Miscavige to serve legal documents in a lawsuit, The Tampa Bay Times earlier reported.

Former Scientologist and actor Leah Remini had also expressed concerns over Shelly Miscavige's whereabouts, claiming she had not seen her in years. Los Angeles police said its detectives were able to contact her in 2014 in response to Remini's missing person request.

The Golden Globes started with Carmichael monologue where he addressed the HFPA diversity issues. "I'm here because I'm Black," he said in reference to last year's controversy. Carmichael went on to call the Hollywood Foreign Press Association a "White organization" and pointed out "they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died."

Carmichael's Tom Cruise and Scientology joke split social media users. "Loved to hear Jerrod Carmichael bring up the terror of Scientology in a room with people who enable it," one user said. Another said, "Shelly Miscavige, the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige, who has been missing since 2007. no one is doing it like Jerrod Carmichael". One user said, "Respect to Jerrod Carmichael for leading the Top Gun segment with a Scientology joke."

On the other hand, one user said, "Poor taste. @TomCruise helped the movie industry survive in 2022." "Setting aside religion, politics, or anything but acting, he is just not good at this hosting gig. Profoundly boring and falls flat at every turn. Amy + Tina next year please! Or our girl Coolidge. Someone actually FUNNY," said another. "Not a good host. Dont know him, not funny and plenty of other known actors could of hosted!" said a user.
